Day 1 • Belize City, Belize

Caravan welcomes you to Belize, an English-speaking ecological paradise and the gateway to the ancient Maya world. Explore charming Caye Caulker, set on the spectacular Belize Barrier Reef. Uncover the mysteries of Tikal, one of the greatest archaeological treasures in the Americas, and discover neighboring Guatemala, the "Land of Eternal Spring," renowned for its magnificent lakes, colorful indigenous culture, and towering volcanoes. Fly into Philip Goldson International Airport, (BZE) in Belize City, Belize. Transfer on your own using the official airport taxi service. Enjoy a two-night stay at your Belize City hotel. Rooms are available for check-in beginning at 4:00 p.m. Dinner is on your own. Join Caravan for an 8:00 p.m. welcome briefing.

Caye Caulker

Day 2 • Belize City, Caye Caulker

This morning, board a scenic 45-minute water taxi boat ride across the turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean Sea to the charming island of Caye Cauker. Measuring just one mile in width and 5 miles long, this laid back tropical island is completely walkable, with no cars allowed. Stroll along sandy streets lined with colorful shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Free time to explore. Lunch is on your own. You may wish to swim or snorkel in the crystal clear waters of The Split, a 20-foot wide water channel that divides the island. Later this afternoon, return to Belize City by water taxi. Enjoy dinner.

Day 3 • San Ignacio, Lake Peten Itza, Guatemala

Journey west this morning through Belize’s scenic coastal savannas to San Ignacio, a charming town nestled at the foothills of the Maya Mountains. Lunch is on your own. Then, cross the border into Guatemala. Continue into the Petén region of Guatemala, the cradle of the Maya civilization. Enjoy a two-night stay at your hotel on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá in the midst of the Petén rainforest. Enjoy dinner.

Tikal

Day 4 • Tikal

This morning, an unforgettable visit to the ruins of Tikal. Settled in 700 B.C. and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tikal was the grandest of all Mayan cities. Here, see towering pyramids rise above the rainforest canopy while the sounds of tropical birds fill the air. Listen and look for howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and keel-billed toucans. Travel back in time as you stroll the jungle shaded grounds of this Mayan jewel. Visit Tikal's great plaza. See the towering Temple of the Grand Jaguar. Visit the Plaza of the Seven Temples and El Mundo Perdido (The Lost World). Enjoy Lunch at Tikal. Return to your resort. Dinner is on your own.

Day 5 • Quiriguá, Central Valley

Travel south this morning through Guatemala’s lowlands, where lush rainforests blanket the dramatic limestone karst landscape. Photostop overlooking Rio Dulce. Enjoy lunch. This afternoon visit Quiriguá, one of the most remarkably preserved Mayan archaeological sites and UNESCO World Heritage Site. See some of the world's largest stelae. Continue to Guatemala’s central valley. Dinner is on your own.

Day 6 • Cayalá, Antigua

Morning drive to the elegant pedestrian village of Cayalá. Lunch is on your own. Then, continue to Antigua, located in the cool mountain highlands of Guatemala and framed by three majestic volcanoes. The region’s rich volcanic topsoil is ideal for growing beans, potatoes, and the ancient staple crop, maiz. Your hotel is near Antigua’s historical center. Enjoy a relaxing two-night stay in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dinner is included.

Day 7 • Antigua

Morning walking tour of Antigua, one of Latin America’s best preserved colonial cities. Travel back in time as you stroll cobblestone streets. For more than two centuries, Antigua was the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala and was the center of Spain’s empire for Central America and southern Mexico. Visit the Central Plaza and see Antigua Cathedral. Visit Las Capuchinas Convent, with its 18 circular living quarters. Enjoy lunch. Then, free time to explore Antigua. A shopper’s dream, Antigua is known for its brilliantly embroidered Mayan textiles, fine jade jewelry, and colorful carved ceremonial masks. Dinner is on your own.

Day 8 • Coffee Plantation, Panajachel

Morning drive to Guatemala’s world renowned coffee growing region. Visit a coffee plantation and sample fresh Guatemalan coffee. Then, visit a Mayan musical museum highlighting Guatemala’s rich musical traditions and unique musical instruments, including the Marimba. Enjoy a private Caravan show featuring local musicians. Lunch is on your own. Then, to Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlán, 5,125 feet above sea level. Enjoy a two-night stay. Dinner is included.

Day 9 • Lake Atitlán Boat Cruise

Morning cruise on Lake Atitlán, “the most beautiful lake in the world.” Formed by a massive volcanic crater, Atitlán’s lakeshore is dotted with verdant hills and picturesque Mayan villages. Three large conical-shaped volcanoes dominate this dramatic landscape. Visit San Juan La Laguna. Enjoy a weaving demonstration. Free time this afternoon to visit the town of Panajachel, where many Mayan villagers still wear traditional dress. You can shop for textiles, ceramics, and watercolor paintings. Lunch and dinner are on your own.

Day 10 • Iximché, Guatemala City

Morning drive to visit Iximché, a post-classic archaeological site. Iximché served as the last capital of the Maya of the Midwestern Highlands and the first capital of the newly arrived Spanish. Today it is a sacred pilgrimage site for Mayans and their shamans. Lunch is on your own. Continue to Guatemala City. Farewell dinner.

Day 11 • Guatemala City

Your tour ends this morning at your hotel in Guatemala City. Breakfast is included only after 6:30 a.m. Caravan includes departure transfers from your hotel to La Aurora Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, Guatemala arriving at 5:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. If you wish to go at another time or extend your stay in Guatemala, you will need to transfer on your own at your own expense. Arrival Transfers

Transfer on your own from the Philip Goldson International Airport, (BZE) to your hotel, the Biltmore Plaza Best Western Plus Mile 3, Northern Highway. Once you have exited customs and collected your baggage at the airport, proceed to the official taxi service known as “Ladyville Taxi Association.” The taxis are located on your left at the exit door of the airport. Here you can request your taxi. Please make sure your taxi has the official green license plate. The driving time from the airport to the hotel is approximately 20 minutes depending on traffic. The cost will range from $25-$35 US Dollars plus tip. Payment can be made by US Dollars or via credit card. Currency exchange and ATMs are available in the airport. When you arrive at your hotel please identify yourself as a Caravan tour member to the front desk personnel.

Departure Transfers

Caravan includes a departure transfer from the Westin Camino Real in Guatemala City to La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, Guatemala arriving at 5:30 am, 8:00 am and 11:00 am. on the day the tour ends. If you wish to leave at another time, you will need to transfer on your own, at your own expense. Taxi fares from your hotel to La Aurora International Airport cost about $20 USD. The driving time from the hotel to the airport is approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Passports & Visas

Guatemala and Belize require a current U.S. passport valid for six months after your date of entry. Non U.S. citizens, please check passport and visa requirements. It is recommended that children under 18 years old traveling internationally without both parents or legal guardians, carry a notarized letter of authorization signed by the missing parent(s) or guardian(s). A notarized birth certificate showing only one parent, a parent’s death certificate, or a court order of child custody may also be permissible. Failure to have proper documentation could result in denial of boarding by the airline, due to international child protection laws.

When exiting Belize via the land border at Benque Viejo/Melchor de Mencos, the standard departure tax for non-residents is $40.00 BZD (which is exactly $20.00 USD). Departure tax subject to change.
