Day 1 • Washington, D.C.
Your vacation begins. Fly into Washington, D.C. Join Caravan’s cocktail party at 6:00 p.m. Then, enjoy a drive by the Washington Monument, White House, Supreme Court, U.S. Capitol and Iwo Jima Memorial en route to a welcoming dinner at the Kennedy Center’s Rooftop Terrace. D

Day 2 • Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon
This morning, visit the Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam, and Korean memorials. Cross the Potomac river to Arlington Cemetery. A tram ride includes a stop at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Next, visit Mount Vernon, George Washington’s original plantation home. Back in Washington, you visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. B

Day 3 • Washington, D.C., Fredericksburg, Virginia, Jamestown, Williamsburg
This morning, visit Ford’s Theater and the Peterson House in Washington. Then, enter Virginia to stop in Fredericksburg. Afternoon drive to visit Jamestown, the first British settlement in America in 1607. After sightseeing, continue to nearby colonial Williamsburg. Tonight, dine while strolling minstrels entertain at Shields Tavern, a colonial inn. BD

Day 4 • Yorktown, Williamsburg
Morning guided visit to the battlements at Yorktown, site of the 1781 Revolutionary victory. Turn back the clock yesteryear in Williamsburg. Enjoy the 1700’s for the rest of the day. Your Caravan pass is the “open sesame” everywhere. Costumed guides greet you as you visit historic buildings. Watch artisans demonstrate 18th-century crafts; stroll Duke of York street; visit a tavern; shop for Americana. Tonight, enjoy a colonial play or concert with Caravan. B

Day 5 • Richmond, Monticello, Shenandoah National Park
Morning drive to Richmond, where you drive along Monument Avenue. Visit the old capitol building of the Confederacy with a capitol guide. Next, drive to Monticello, lunch at historic Michies Tavern and have a guided visit to Jefferson’s mountaintop mansion. Then, enter Shenandoah Park and drive along Skyline Drive of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Skyland Lodge. Enjoy dinner at the lodge. BLD

Day 6 • Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Through Virginia orchard country this morning. Then, into West Virginia, free time at Harper’s Ferry, site of John Brown’s anti-slavery raid. Cross the Mason Dixon Line and enter Pennsylvania. With a local guide, visit the battlefields at Gettysburg, site of Lincoln’s famous address. Here the tide of the Civil War turned in 1863. Out with Caravan tonight for a Civil War feast at the Farnsworth House in Gettysburg. BD

Day 7 • Amish Countryside, Valley Forge, Philadelphia
Through Amish fields this morning to Bird-In-Hand, for a traditional Amish family-style lunch. Visit an Amish home. Then, en route to Valley Forge, have a scenic drive through Amish countryside. Visit Valley Forge, where Washington’s troops wintered. Next, arrive in Philadelphia. Visit Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Tonight, a horse-drawn carriage ride through historic Philadelphia. BL

Day 8 • Philadelphia, Baltimore, Annapolis, Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
Free time this morning to explore Independence Square. Mid-morning departure for Maryland to stop at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Then, a short drive takes you to Annapolis. Visit the U.S. Naval Academy with a local guide. Then, drive to Wyndham Bristol, next to Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Tonight, enjoy a brief sightseeing drive along Georgetown’s cobblestone streets en route to your farewell dinner party in Georgetown. BD

Day 9 • Washington, D.C.

In 1965, Roger Mudd hosted a two-hour CBS TV special on Caravan Tours. This TV production took about one month to make and was so successful it inspired the 1968 romantic comedy movie “If it’s Tuesday this must be Belgium.” In the early 50’s the Mayor of Dublin presented Caravan with the Key to Dublin for bringing the first American tour to the city after WWII.
