Alcatraz Island (aka ‘The Rock’) is located approximately 1.5 miles offshore from San Francisco, in the middle of San Francisco Bay. As early as 1868 it served as a military prison and bay lighthouse. Since 1986, Alcatraz Island has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
