San Francisco Tourism Information & History

Tourism has a substantially large and positive impact on San Francisco and remains the number one industry for the “City By The Bay”.

San Francisco tourism has contributed to making California the most popular U.S. vacation destination and the most popular American destination for international tourists. Visit this page for some valuable San Francisco Tourism Tips.

Tourism in San Francisco is fuelled by travelers and travel planners who consistently rank San Francisco among the world’s top international cities.

According to the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, in 2005 almost 16 million people visited the Bay Area, making San Francisco the 3rd most visited U.S. city (by foreign tourists) after New York and Los Angeles.

San Francisco is named for its patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi. As “Everybody’s Favorite City”, San Francisco boasts scenic Pacific Ocean views, vibrant neighborhood character, world class dining, multi-cultural attractions and one of the world’s most famous landmarks, the Golden Gate Bridge.

Famous San Francisco Tourism Landmarks

Golden Gate Bridge: Built between 1933 and 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge is 1.7 miles across and takes a bit of time to cross by foot. Considered by most to be one of the world’s most beautiful bridges, the Golden Gate Bridge contains 80,000 miles of steel wire and the two towers are 746 feet tall (about 75 stories).

Fisherman’s Wharf: World famous Fisherman’s Wharf has been home to San Francisco’s fishing community for nearly 125 years and is now a world renowned San Francisco tourism attraction.

Cable Cars: San Francisco’s world famous cable cars have operated since 1873 and were designated a national landmark in 1964. One should never visit San Francisco without riding a cable car.

Alcatraz Island: Often referred to as “the rock”, Alcatraz was once considered America’s toughest maximum-security federal prison and ran from the 1930’s to the mid 1960’s. It is believed that none of the 14 attempts at escape from Alcatraz were ever successful.

Chinatown: San Francisco’s Chinatown is not only the largest in the U.S., but also the largest Chinatown outside Asia. Well worth a visit!

Union Square: The heartbeat of San Francisco features a large central shopping plaza and a terraced performance area with outdoor seating. Union Square is popular year-round.
