About Bay of Fundy
Home to the world’s highest tides and separating New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the 200-mile long (320 km) Bay of Fundy attracts visitors from around the globe.
Twice a day, the height of incoming and outgoing tides can vary by as much as 50 feet or more (15+ metres), as over 160 billion tonnes of salt water empty the Bay of Fundy at low tide, and fill up the Bay again at high tide. This massive volume of water surpasses all the world’s combined flow of freshwater during the same amount of time!
The magnificent Fundy Tides have the power to change the direction of rivers at high tide, where it’s common to witness salt water waves flowing upstream along the river. Visit the Bay of Fundy with Caravan Tours and enjoy spectacular natural change of scenery thanks to the Fundy Tides!
One of the 7 Wonders of North America
Only 90 degrees of latitude separate the North Pole and the Equator. The Bay of Fundy is located almost half way between them at 44.77 degrees north. Millions of years of natural history are exposed along this diverse coastal landscape that includes breathtaking cliffs, sea caves, and natural rock formations like Flowerpot Rocks at Hopewell Cape.
Considered one of North America’s 7 wonders, the Bay of Fundy is also home to some of the world’s rarest whales, as well significant dinosaur fossils and semi-precious metals.
Standing up to 70 feet tall, Hopewell Rocks, which are also sometimes referred to as “The Rocks” or “Flowerpot Rocks,” were formed by tidal erosion over millions of years. Looking like giant flowerpots, these towering sandstone monoliths still have remnants of vegetation and trees growing above the high tide line. Below the tide line, the Flowerpot Rocks are well worn and eroded, which gives them their unusual shapes.
Life in the Bay of Fundy
When the tide is out, the sea bottom of the Bay of Fundy is completely exposed, stranding boats and revealing the natural coastal shoreline. When the tide water returns, it is an exceptional place to view unique whale species and thousands of migratory shorebirds.
Right whales, Humpbacks, Fin, and Minke whales all gather here along with white-sided dolphins and porpoises. They regularly visit the Bay of Fundy to feast on the abundant schools of Pollock, Mackerel, Herring, Krill, and Squid.

Caravan's Proud History
In 1965, Roger Mudd hosted a two-hour CBS TV special on Caravan Tours. This TV production took about one month to make and was so successful it inspired the 1968 romantic comedy movie “If it’s Tuesday this must be Belgium.” In the early 50’s the Mayor of Dublin presented Caravan with the Key to Dublin for bringing the first American tour to the city after WWII. Since then, Caravan has been recognized as a pioneer in travel. You can trust in our stability, experience and dedication to quality.
