Some Brief History of Cape Breton
An island that was first spotted by Italian explorer John Cabot in 1497, Cape Breton maintains deep historical significance as it was once under both French and English rule. Once considered a British Crown colony, it joined Nova Scotia and Canada in 1820, creating the province as it is known today.
Many Scottish immigrants chose Cape Breton as their home in the mid-19th century, where its natural landscapes continue to bear striking similarity to the coasts of Europe. Today, Cape Breton maintains a reputation for its exceptional natural beauty, Scottish influence, and unique coastal charm that attracts tourists around the world.

Connecting With Indigenous Cultures in Cape Breton
There are opportunities for guests to learn more about the indigenous communities that have called Cape Breton home for thousands of years. The Mi’kmaq people refer to Cape Breton as Unama’ki, where five different communities continue to live in the area, carefully preserving their languages and ways of life. The Eskasoni, Membertou, Wagmatcook, We’koqma’q, and Potlotek remain in Cape Breton, offering authentic and unique activities for tourists visiting the island.
Consider visiting Membertou Heritage Park for medicine garden tours and drum-making workshops, while enjoying an indigenous-owned restaurant. Further, Eskasoni Cultural Journeys are available near Bras d’Or Lake, where guests can watch traditional dance and smudging ceremonies. Another great option is the Wagmatcook Culture & Heritage Centre, offering an indigenous-owned restaurant and museum. Also, the Mi’kmaw Interpretive Centre is a historical hub of ancient artifacts and indigenous music, exploring the Mi’kmaq’s relationship with French settlers hundreds of years ago.
What To Know Before Visiting Cape Breton
Cape Breton is world-renowned for its natural beauty and endless outdoor adventure activities. Many guests are surprised by the slower pace of life on the island, and guests should remain patient throughout their journey. There are occasions when amenities, including restaurants and museums, are unexpectedly closed, and some modern comforts, including WIFI and cell service, may be unavailable.
Guests should also pack for cooler weather, as ocean breezes can offer a chill, even in the summer months. Still, summers can be exceptionally hot, while winters can be incredibly cold as well. Fall offers the perfect balance of comfortable weather and available activities, while summer is considered the peak of travel season in Cape Breton.

The coastal waters of Cape Breton can result in the weather being somewhat volatile, and sudden changes should be expected. Summers can shift from hot to cool, while winters remain especially cold. How To Visit: Solo Travel or Guided Tours of Cape Breton
Tourists often fly into Halifax’s major international airport and then rent a car to explore Cape Breton on their own schedule. There are hurdles involved with this approach, as some accommodations, including popular camping sites, are booked several months in advance. Further, there is a challenge involved with driving in unfamiliar places, as many roads throughout Cape Breton can be narrow.
Solo travel is a whole lot of fun, but there are benefits to leaving the booking of accommodations and driving to those who have experience navigating these areas. For any guests who are unsure, consider booking a group travel offering that handles the fine details of booking and transportation, allowing you to sit back and relax, focusing on the full enjoyment of your trip.
