Use this guide to plan the ultimate trip of the Cabot Trail, and explore some of Canada’s most beautiful landscapes one stop at a time.
What Is The Cabot Trail?
The Cabot Trail is a 300-kilometer loop around the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It can be either driven or hiked, offering stunning visuals along coastal cliffs, along with many charming small communities to be discovered along the way. The northern portion of the Cabot Trail is home to one of Canada’s most beautiful national Parks, the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Here, visitors can enjoy endless hiking and camping, all along the backdrop of some of the most dramatic landscapes in North America.
Known for its coastal charm and ocean views, the Cabot Trail remains a popular destination for tourists from across the world, enjoying world-class dining, outdoor adventure, and even spectacular golf courses. Take in these landscapes with a road trip that includes stops along breathtaking cliffs and never-ending ocean views.
Things To See and Do Along The Cabot Trail
Nature lovers will be impressed not just by the abundance of stellar views along every portion of the Cabot Trail, but also by the many hiking trails that are ready to be enjoyed at your leisure. Most notably, visitors often make a point of enjoying the Skyline Trail, a moderate hike that ends with a dramatic cliffside view of Canada’s east coast.
The Cape Breton Highlands National Park remains home to 26 different hiking trails of varying difficulties, including campgrounds that offer the chance for visitors to pitch a tent against the backdrop of oceanic views.
Hiking Along The Cabot Trail
The hiking trails found across the Cabot Trail are plentiful, including options directly in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and along the coast of Nova Scotia. These are just some of the options available. Some of the top hiking trails along the Cabot Trail include:
Franey Trail: Take in the views at the Gulf of St. Lawrence with this relatively easy 6 km hike.
Middle Head Trail: Just under 4km of forested hiking, including coastal panoramic views.
The Acadian Trail: Take in stellar views of the iconic Acadian forest with this route intended for experienced hikers.
Mica Hill Trail: A challenging 7.3 km hike that ends with stunning views of the summit of Mica Rock.
Fishing Cove Trail: A difficult 12 km hike with opportunities for remote backcountry camping.
Camping Opportunities
Some of the camping grounds available to guests along the Cabot Trail are truly impressive, offering scenic views that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Some of the best campgrounds include:
Public campgrounds offered by the province of Nova Scotia can be found at the Cape Breton Highlands National Park spots, and include Broad Cove, Ingonish Beach, and Cheticamp. These sites offer a mix of traditional camping and RV camping, with sites that are known to be family-friendly and offer access to hiking trails, beaches, and seaside views.
Avoca Birches Campground: A private site that is well-equipped for campers of all experience levels, including beach access and exceptional stargazing.
Hideaway Campground: Equipped with traditional drive-in camping and cabins, suitable for visitors who want something a little more comfortable.
Waves End RV & Campground: Stunning views with campsites fully equipped to support RVs or large camping vehicles.
All of these campsites remain highly popular, often being booked up several months in advance. Consider booking six months ahead of time, or collaborate with a tour operator that maintains pre-booked campsites. Many public campsites are “bare bones,” meaning they lack amenities that you might find at other campsites. Browse through available options and find sites that meet your needs.
Outdoor Recreation Found Throughout The Cabot Trail
Hiking: The many trails found throughout the Cabot Trail take guests through deep forests and unique coves, with stunning visuals, including coastal scenery. Thousands of guests visit Nova Scotia to take on the full loop of the Cabot Trail, or one of the many trails available throughout the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Do your research prior to embarking on any kind of hiking trail and enjoy responsibly.
Cycling: The roads that make up the 300 km of the Cabot Trail are well enjoyed by cyclists, offering challenging and winding roads, incredible sightseeing, and the opportunity to connect with the locals. These roads remain well-maintained, but come with many slopes and hills that may prove challenging to some cyclists. Prime cycling season on the Cabot Trail occurs during the summer months of late May to August.
Boating, Paddling, Canoeing, and Kayaking: Group tours are a fun way to enjoy the seas and connect with those who enjoy these watersports. Head out on the water and see the coast from an entirely different perspective.
Whale Watching: Explore the waters along the Cabot Trail by taking part in a world-famous whale watching tour. View the creatures that call the Nova Scotia waters home, which can include exotic birds, whales, and seals. Take part in a boat tour along Pleasant Bay for a unique experience on the water.
Golfing: The Cabot Trail remains well known for its beautiful golf courses that take guests on a tour of the area’s landscapes. Consider taking in a few holes of golf at The Cabot Cliffs or the Cape Breton Highland Links.
Fishing: Those who love fishing will be overwhelmed with the number of opportunities, including options along the Margaree River, the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Neil’s Harbour, and St. Ann’s Bay. Try your luck at catching beautiful salmon, trout, and mackerel.
Beaches: Soak up the sun across the Cabot Trail, including the beautiful beaches at Black Brook Beach, Ingonish Beach, and Cabot Landing. Some beaches even offer surfing for experienced guests.
When To Visit The Cabot Trail
The best time to visit the Cabot Trail remains dependent on your preferences. Learn when the best time to visit the Cabot Trail is.
Summer remains the best time to explore the outdoors and enjoy the endless outdoor activities. Still, popular beaches can get crowded during the summer months, while popular campsites are likely to be booked well in advance. The warmer weather remains enjoyable but comes with additional traffic around peak travel season.
Fall offers some of the most incredible colors found along the Cabot Trail, which are truly breathtaking when paired with the endless coastal views. Cooler temperatures are making camping a bit brisk, but still comfortable. Pack accordingly for visiting the Cabot Trail during the fall months and experience a quieter and more relaxed travel experience with fewer tourists present.
Spring is just the beginning of the Cabot Trail tourist season, so crowds are sure to be more sparse. However, some amenities may be closed as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Winter travel throughout the Cabot Trail is a unique experience, often requiring visitors to use snow tires throughout their journey. Many campsites and businesses close up shop during the winter months, but the views of frozen cliffs and ice-cold waters are truly impressive.
Helpful Tips To Make The Most of Your Trip
Many guests choose to road trip through the full loop of the Cabot Trail, often flying into Halifax, Nova Scotia, and then renting a car. Those who are not confident driving through an unfamiliar place should consider booking a tour group that can take care of their ground transportation needs.
The Cabot Trail loop will take several days to complete, so book your accommodations near popular stops along the way. Many hotels and campgrounds are available, and you will need to carefully pre-plan your accommodations. It is possible to drive the entire loop in the day, but if you plan on taking part in hiking trails, shopping, or sightseeing, you should plan several days for your trip.
Driving the loop counter-clockwise will place visitors on the oceanside of the loop, which may be your preference, offering quick access to viewpoints or stops along the way. Driving the loop clockwise is also an enjoyable option that is very doable.
You will need to purchase a national park pass to drive the entire trail, as the Cabot Trail runs directly through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Certain portions of the Cabot Trail are challenging, even for experienced drivers. You should expect, at times, winding roads and tight spaces.
Plan for unexpected stops, as the trail is home to small boutique shops, roadside seafood shakes, and unique viewpoints that will prompt you to stop and enjoy.
Bring along snacks, food, and water suitable for a long road trip.
Embrace exploration and see what there is to discover in Nova Scotia!
Food and Dining Along The Cabot Trail
Nova Scotia remains well-known for its seafood, and as such, the dining reflects the endless options available directly from the sea. Roadside eateries remain plentiful, but there are also exceptional lobster rolls, clam chowders, and local fine dining establishments that cater to a long list of different tastes. It doesn’t get fresher than this, as much of the seafood available through the Cabot Trail is directly from the sea to your table.
Shopping and Souvenirs
Gift shops and souvenir stands remain plentiful along the Cabot Trail, with many shops offering a glimpse of Acadian culture. Chéticamp remains a popular shopping destination, where guests can take home hand-crafted gifts made directly by locals.
