Why Visit PEI Today

Prince Edward Island remains a hidden travel gem located on Canada’s eastern coast. It is home to some of the most beautiful ocean views, red sandy beaches, and endless green rolling hills that are truly beautiful. A quiet and calm coastal location rich in history and charm, PEI is also home to exceptional dining experiences, including craft beer and wine that will delight even the most particular palates. Guests can experience East Coast charm that has historically welcomed guests from across the world for its world-renowned hospitality.

Visit for the landscapes and stay to enjoy one of the most unique and awe-inspiring provinces in Canada.

While it is a small province, it maintains distinct red sandy beaches that are ready to be enjoyed, along with an impressive food scene that looks to its nearby waters for fresh seafood. Explore the lands of PEI and take in the awe-inspiring views that were the inspiration for the famous book Anne of Green Gables. Many guests road trip through the Confederation Trails, taking in historic lighthouses, but also enjoy the endless food and craft beers available along the way.

Learn About the History of PEI

Prince Edward Island is historic in that it was the landmass that was first spotted by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534 in search of land. Its long history of British and French rule makes it unique, acting as a centerpiece of exploration from hundreds of years ago. It was in the city of Charlottetown that Canada’s independence first arose, as the Charlottetown Conference led to the formal creation of the country of Canada. Further, PEI is home to indigenous history, as these lands are known to be culturally and spiritually important to the Mi’kma’ki.

In many ways, PEI is known as the birthplace of Canada, where guests can learn more about the roots of this great country and how it has grown to be the hidden gem it is today.

Food and Dining in PEI

Today, PEI is an established destination for fine dining, including local wines and seafood that reflect the province’s charm and culture. The island has gained a reputation for housing exceptional restaurants, including some owned by celebrity chefs. Of course, there are endless seafood options, including world-class oysters, mussels, and lobsters.

Further, many eateries offer exceptional seafood chowders with local ingredients, along with influences from the province’s wild blueberries, cranberries, and strawberries. Make a point of enjoying some PEI potatoes as well, as the province is one of the largest suppliers of potatoes in the country. Enjoy fine dining experiences, but also make sure to enjoy more casual establishments, including roadside chipperies and seafood shacks.

What to See and Do In Prince Edward Island

These are just some of the must-do activities in Prince Edward Island.

  • Stroll the Streets of Charlottetown: Known as the birthplace of Canada, everyone visiting PEI should visit the beautiful seaside town of Charlottetown. Offering small-town charm but plenty of walkable streets, guests can enjoy this beautiful city at any pace they please, while indulging in cafes, boutique shops, and exceptional dining, all along the backdrop of Canada’s coast.

  • Anne of Green Gables House in Cavendish: See for yourself the inspiration behind L.M. Montgomery’s world-famous series of novels. Fans will be delighted to explore the grounds of this carefully preserved historic site, complete with red dirt roads and rolling farmlands. Lovers’ Lane and the Haunted Wood Trail can be enjoyed by all guests, bringing visitors back in time. Some lucky guests will be able to interact with actors who are playing the characters of Anne of Green Gables, providing a unique experience, especially for fans of the novels.

  • Enjoy Cavendish Beach: Enjoy red sand and calming waves at this iconic beach that attracts both tourists and locals alike.

  • Drive The Confederation Bridge: See the sights of coastal Canada by driving the 13 km stretch of bridge that connects two provinces, PEI and New Brunswick. As the longest bridge in Canada, it remains an important structure for PEI’s tourism industry, helping tourists skip out on slow ferries and instead visit by car.

  • Dine on Fresh Seafood: No trip to PEI would be complete without tasting the province’s oysters or lobsters. Many community centers in PEI are home to lobster dinners that welcome guests from around the world.

  • Visit the PEI National Park: Those who love the great outdoors should plan a trip to this incredible national park, home to red sandy beaches and beautiful dunes. Experience hiking, camping, kayaking, and fishing at this stunning outdoor destination.

What To Know Before Visiting PEI

Use these tips before visiting PEI and learn what to know before your trip.

  • Summer and fall remain the best seasons for visiting. Winter and spring can be cold and harsh, while some of the province’s amenities may be closed for the season. Fall remains a great month to visit as it sees reduced tourist traffic, but is also still very comfortable weather-wise. Further, the fall colors of PEI are truly remarkable, especially against the backdrop of the area’s coastal waters.

  • Expect toll roads, especially when using the Confederate Bridge. Ferries are another option for visiting the province, but they also come at a cost. Plan ahead for visiting and explore options that suit your travel needs. Booking alongside a tour group can help you avoid complications before they occur.

  • Travel outside the main tourist season can be complex, as some businesses and landmarks may be closed. Consider booking a trip for the summer or fall travel season.

  • Public transportation is limited, and guests will need to rent a car to enjoy the province.

  • Rural life is a key element in PEI, and guests should expect a slower and more relaxed pace of travel in this province.

  • Winter is cold throughout PEI, and if you plan on visiting during the winter months, you should pack for the weather, including winter jackets, boots, and mittens.
