Columbia Icefields Parkway Canada
Discover Alberta Canada on our Caravan Canadian Rockies Tour and your all inclusive vacation will include a guided tour of the Columbia Icefields Parkway. As part of our Caravan Icefields Parkway tour (and weather permitting), you will also enjoy an all-terrain Ice Explorer ride across the easily accessible Athabasca Glacier, North America’s most visited Glacier!
The only highway link between Jasper and Lake Louise in Alberta is the Columbia Icefields Parkway. This 144-mile (232-km) stretch of Canadian highway runs along the Continental Divide past glacial ice fields, high mountain peaks, and the evergreen vastness of the Rock Mountains. Amazingly, run off from the Columbia Icefields feeds into three separate oceans, the North Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Arctic Ocean!
Athabasca Glacier Part of Columbia Icefield
Straddling the Continental Divide, the Columbia Icefield dates back nearly quarter million years. Part of it makes up Banff National Park and rest is in Jasper National Park. Located in the Canadian Rockies between Alberta and British Columbia, the Athabasca Glacier is just one of Columbia Icefield’s six Glacier extensions.
Unfortunately, the Athabasca Glacier has been receding rapidly (nearly 1 mile) since the turn of the 20th century, which makes this a photo opportunity you definitely do not want to miss. Be sure to charge up your batteries and pack up your lenses for a once in a lifetime opportunity to stand on top of this amazing Canadian glacier.
Athabasca Glacier Ice Explorer
This all-wheel drive, tri-axle ice vehicle transports you safely up to Athabasca Glacier where you’ll step out onto glacial ice that could be as old as 200,000 years or more. Your guide will explain in detail how the 6-mile long Athabasca Glacier was formed and the devastating impact that global warming has had on this magnificent Canadian Glacier.
A stroll on the Glacier Skywalk caps your trip, at a point where only glass separates you from the 918-foot drop to the Sunwapta Valley below. The wildlife, glacial streams, waterfalls, and the magnificent mountain scenery will invigorate your senses on this Canadian journey of discovery.
Glacier-Fed Peyto Lake
In the Canadian Rockies you will find numerous pristine high altitude lakes that are fed by the clear, cold, crystal waters of the Canada’s glaciers. One of these high-altitude, glacier-fed, emerald green lakes is Peyto Lake (pronounced pee-toh). At a half a mile wide and nearly 2-miles long, picturesque Peyto Lake is over 6100 feet above sea level.
On this trip, Caravan stops for a photo opportunity at Alberta’s Peyto Lake in Banff National Park, which is best viewed from Bow Summit. The emerald colour of Peyto Lake is due to suspended particles of glacial “rock flour” that pours into the lake during summer. The splendid turquoise color is a stunning contrast to evergreen forests that surrounds this frigid mountainous reservoir.
Peyto Lake often graces the cover of illustrated books and is a highly sought-after destination for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers with a passion for the beauty of the Canadian Rockies.

“This was a totally awesome and magnificent tour. Our first with Caravan and now certainly not our last, we couldn’t be more pleased. It went way above all our expectations. Extremely great value. Most spectacular place we have ever visited with the possible exception of the Grand Canyon. Timing of all the stops was excellent. Day after day we were amazed beyond words by the beauty of the sites visited. Don’t omit any stops. Information, history, stories and jokes from our director were outstanding, the most awesome we have ever had. She helped everyone on our bus in one way or another. I would love to have her on every tour and we would recommend this tour over and over.”Mr. & Mrs. D.G., Greenwood, Indiana
“This was our 7th Caravan tour. Needless to say, we keep coming back because we have great experiences on Caravan tours. Our lives are enriched on every tour by the places we visit and by the people we meet. The places we went, the things we saw, and the activities we experienced fulfilled my expectations for this trip. In every direction, the scenery was stunning...so beautiful. There were plenty of great activities such as the float on the Bow River, walking on the glacier, the cruise to Goat Haunt and the Peace Park, the gondola in Banff, the Red Jammer tour in Glacier...everything. Yet, there was enough time to explore on our own.”Mr. C.R., Lebanon, Pennsylvania
“This tour was so much fun and sold us on Caravan. This was our first Caravan tour following multiple trips with numerous other companies, including a previous one to the Canadian Rockies with another company. For the money, the Caravan Tour is a thorough and very enjoyable tour, good accommodations and an excellent value. Couldn’t believe what quality we got for such a low cost! As each day passed, the sights became more and more impressive, the mountains higher and more snow capped, culminating in the Columbia Icefield. Despite the cold, we were so happy that our director did everything on our itinerary. He was our all time favorite tour guide. So well-organized, professional, amiable and well-versed in the Canadian Rockies. Every day had its special moments, a complete itinerary. We had a wonderful time! We were pleased with every accommodation where we stayed. Great accommodations for comfort, accessibility, and service. Loved the Jasper House cabins and Banff Lodge.”Mr. & Mrs. W.H., Berea, Ohio
“A very refreshing, nature-filled trip. Excellent, beautiful scenery was absolutely breathtaking. In AWE of the views at Lake Moraine and Lake Louise. Although the weather was not typical for the time of our visit, we loved every bit of the variety of cold, snow, rain, and sun that we experienced. Loved the Red Jammer Road to the Sun. River rafting in the snow was fabulous. Glacier field was breathtaking. Ample time for rest and photo stops of views to have as cherished memories of this tour.”Mr. & Mrs. D.W., Vacherie, Louisiana
“A special family trip to celebrate my husband’s retirement. Loved the tour in full. The best trip I have ever taken. Just loved it. Our sightseeing and activities could not have been better. The Rockies were great. I enjoyed every activity and this is why I chose Caravan Canadian Rockies tour. Each day just got better and better. Everyday we kept saying “can’t get any better” and every day we were wrong. Just gorgeous. We got to see a lot but didn’t feel rushed, it was just right. The trip was broken up and we were able to stretch when tired of traveling. Our director was exceptional. The added knowledge of the area complemented each and every sight that we got to see. Words cannot begin to express our director’s expertise and his presentational skills, the best ever. I will use Caravan again.”Mrs. & Mr. S.L., Murrysville, Pennsylvania
“It was our first Caravan tour. We were amazed at how smoothly it all went. We were awestruck by the scenery and by the friendly ambiance of our travel group. We were glad to have walking available to whatever extent we wanted or could manage. Loved the wide range of offerings, rafting, gondola, Red Jammer ride, awesome scenery, seeing the stampede grounds. Excellent to have rotation of seats!! A smooth, expertly ride with local info and a tidy coach, our driver was a true gentleman. A very wide range of places to stay and something for everyone in the group, well done!”Mr. & Mrs. P.W., Polo, Illinois
“Without a doubt, this was the best tour I have been on. Worth every dollar. The sights were the most beautiful I have ever seen and the stops, attractions, guides, free time, and overall schedule was just perfect. Perfect selection of activities and free time. Where to start! The cruise on Waterton Lake and dinner with friends was great. Our guide on the boat did a great job explaining everything we were seeing. The Red Jammer ride and Sun Highway and everything associated with that day was absolutely amazing. The drivers were outstanding and the scenery and wildlife was breathtaking. While we experienced fog going up Sulphur Mountain on the gondola, the views at the top were out of this world. Then the fog lifted and what a sight! All the other stops like Lake Louise and the many waterfalls were great additions to the trip. I would have not wanted to miss any of them. We saw so much more than I expected and I think because of the way our TD managed the tour and the group, we all developed personal relationships with each other early on in the tour and the entire group worked together to make sure no one was left out. Everything went just like clockwork and we had nothing to think about except to enjoy and take in the beauty of the country. Leave the work to Caravan! Another great tour, thanks!!”Mr. W.S., Dayton, Ohio
“Absolutely marvelous. Thoroughly planned and executed, the trip was awesome in every way! Every activity was wonderful, the sightseeing extraordinary. We have never been on a trip where every turn had scenery that never ended. The most consistently beautiful scenery we have ever seen. Every stop was well-used, rest was perfectly timed. This trip was an incredible value for the cost involved. Lots of credit to our director and driver for being so positive about Caravan and its people.”Mr. & Mrs. R.B., Berwyn, Pennsylvania
“The Canadian Rockies are so very beautiful and it was wonderful to be able to experience the beauty. It was great staying in the Banff Park Lodge in the middle of the tour. We were very happy with the trip. It was a great vacation and we’d go on another Caravan tour for sure.”Mrs. N.H., Pittsford, New York
“This was truly an amazing trip that I will remember forever and have already recommended to several friends. I loved everything! The highlights for me personally would have to be the Red Jammer tour, the lakeshore hotel, the raft ride in Banff, Columbia Icefields, and the wildlife. Loved the nature talk in Jasper, it was great. It was all more than I expected, simply amazing.”Mrs. S.W., Tampa, Florida
“This was my favorite Caravan tour I have taken, this was my fifth now. There was so much to see and experience. Everytime I turned around there was a ‘wow’ moment. Our director was a wealth of information and she seemed to truly love this region. I really loved the way we slowed down for animals and landforms that were spotted, amazing. Each hotel was unique and special.”Ms. A.M., Dayton, Ohio
“I would never hesitate to go on another Caravan tour or recommend to others. Plenty of time to do what was offered and take breaks. The hotels exceeded expectations. More than I could have imagined. Banff was lovely and in Jasper, I could reach out and touch an elk. I don’t have the words to express my joy. I’m still annoyingly happy two weeks later. Great job!”Ms. A.P., King Of Prussia, Pennsylvania
“This is my second tour with Caravan Tours and the second was just as good as the first. There was not as much red in Canada as there was on the Grand Canyon tour, but then again the height and beauty of the Canadian Rockies is a whole different world. It was hard to compare the two. Both had their own beauty.”Mr. & Mrs. G.H., Portsmouth, Rhode Island
“I didn't think I would ever take a guided tour. However, I am so glad that I did. This was a great trip. I would travel with Caravan again.”Ms. S.C., San Bruno, California
“I am not a tour person. We always travel independently or with private guides and drivers. Last December we decided to give Caravan a try and we did the Panama trip. We really enjoyed it, so decided to go again on the Canadian Rockies. I have been all over the world and seen many amazing things but I have NEVER experienced the jaw-dropping scenery that is the Canadian Rockies! I will never forget them. Magical, mysterious, awe-inspiring. Really could not get enough of those magnificent Rockies! Enjoyed the Banff gondola and really liked the free time in Banff. Waterton was a nice quiet town that I enjoyed. Really liked the morning tour through Calgary, saw some interesting architecture. Nice to be in one place for two nights, you have the freedom to stay in town or relax. Our director was nothing short of awesome. Thank you for sharing this with us. Now I think I will have to travel with you to Guatemala, a good way to see the pyramids of Tikal and some lovely countryside. Your tours are very well-priced for all we get to see and do. Keep up the good work!”Mrs. C.W., Pitman, New Jersey
“The sightseeing and activities were even better than we thought! I still can't believe we did so much in such a short time, but we did not feel stressed. It was great! Thank you all at Caravan, because you put so much thought into what would make this a great tour. We really loved it and would do it all over again in a minute! Well, maybe next year! Thanks.”Mr. & Mrs. H.C., Port St. Lucie, Florida
“This tour far exceeded anything I expected. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this trip, the beauty of the country and our very special tour director and driver and their attention to our safety and well-being. Your TD and driver both receive my utmost thanks for their performance during our adventure at the icefields. It is at times like that the true character and skills of people really show and we had two of the best. They speak well of your company. Many thanks and I will make sure everyone I talk to knows of the quality of your company.”Ms. J.R., Henderson, Nevada
“The most beautiful sights we had ever experienced. The natural scenery of the Canadian Rockies was amazing. Just the right amount of activities. We always felt comfortable and we had many opportunities for beautiful pictures.”Mr. R.S., Irvine, California
“This was our first Caravan tour. All in all, the tour was more than I expected. Our driver was amazing and our director was terrific, always clear, concise and very approachable and I enjoyed our time together. The highlight was of course the scenery, spectacular. I was expecting that, but I had no idea how fun the activities would be. The was a special event each day. The boat on the Waterton Lake, the Jammer in Glacier, the gondola in Banff, the raft on the Bow River, the glaciers in Jasper. All hikes and tours were exceptional. We saw big horned sheep, black bear, white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, moose, grizzly bear, bald eagles, silver foxes, white pelicans. We learned about glaciers and bear grass. We learned how glacier flour colors the waters of the lake. Every day there was something new. Each day there was a coach ride, always with some information from our TD, outside activities, including all the planned activities, choices for hikes and short walks at sites and free time to explore on our own, and shopping. It gave a little rhythm to each day, perfectly intertwined and suited me perfectly. Thank you so much!!”Mr. & Mrs. M.S., San Francisco, California
“Wonderful. Our first tour and I would do it again. I cannot think of one negative about this trip. Our director was wow, wow, wow. Kept us on time and the ball rolling, great and very knowledgeable. We were very happy to see many animals. The activities were good and very enjoyable. Loved shopping in Banff. We made some great friends and have many memories to share and remember. Thanks for the memories!”Mr. & Mrs. M.R., Montgomery, Texas
“Breathtaking, exciting, interesting and just amount of stops and scenery and experience, all were wonderful. This is the best tour I’ve ever been on and I plan to do all tours with Caravan. It was the most perfect! Coach was extremely clean, pretty, and comfortable too.”Ms. V.S., Spring Hill, Florida
“My wife and I were a bit concerned about a pre-planned tour. Our feeling was that we might feel rushed at the tour stops. We were both pleasantly surprised at the freedom we had and at the quality of the accommodations. Not enough words for all the for all the sights. Suffice it to say...beautiful, astounding, and breathtaking.”Mr. E.G., Round Rock, Texas
“Phenomenal sightseeing in Alberta. Appreciate the variety of activities and the very impressive sightseeing in beautiful nature. Quality meals in taste and variety. Wonderful customer service. The people who worked with us by phone before the trip were excellent communicators during the planning of our adventure. Thank you Caravan for your attention to detail in organizing a comprehensive experience when you organize your trips.”Drs. R.S & L.S., Jacksonville, Oregon
“This was our second Caravan trip and definitely won’t be our last. Even though we’ve been the youngest couple on both of our trips, we have loved every minute of the trips. Everything was fantastic! We loved how busy and fun-filled the tours are. Definitely nothing we would have considered doing on our own because of price but we are so glad they were included in this trip. There wasn’t much downtime, but some is a good thing. Being able to go off and hike on your own is how you see some of the best things. Our days felt like they were so full, yet we had plenty of time to hike and do things on our own. Great balance.”Mr. & Mrs. Z.P., Norwalk, Ohio
“Our first Caravan tour and we really enjoyed it! It was wonderful that so many activities were included in the tour price. We loved the beautiful scenery and all the lakes. Float trip was awesome. The trip to the glacier at Icefield was also great. The provided breakfasts were very good as were the dinners. We enjoyed all the hotels. It was fun staying in some more quaint places such as the Jasper Bungalows. Seeing the elk there was priceless and the staff were so nice and friendly. I also appreciated moving around on the coach, it was an opportunity to meet more people each day. Our TD had such a knowledge base on geology, wildlife, history, and geography.”Mrs. J.F., Madison, Wisconsin These are only the first 25 reviews of this tour... Read all 186 Reviews »
