Experiencing an Icefields Parkway Tour For The First Time
An Icefields Parkway tour remains an essential way to experience the Canadian Rockies, taking guests through some of the most impressive Alberta landscapes, all while offering easy access to both Jasper and Banff. This route maintains so much more than incredible views, but is actually a historic fur-trade route once used by indigenous communities. For hundreds of years, the Kootenay people would hunt and forage for precious furs, using these roads to connect with European explorers. Today, these roads are used by tourists for incredible sightseeing, but also for access to spots like the Columbia Icefield and the Athabasca Glacier.
Now, travelers from across the world navigate the roads in search of adventure, marking it as a key roadway for connecting all that the Canadian Rockies have to offer. Explore the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, and experience why so many tourists choose this destination for its incredible natural beauty.
Where is The Icefields Parkway?
The Icefields Parkway is a 140-mile stretch of highway that extends across the Canadian Rockies, intersecting between Lake Louise and Jasper National Park. It runs directly into Banff National Park, offering stellar views of the area’s mountain landscapes, including everything from beautiful turquoise lakes, ice-tipped mountains, and endless forests. It is widely known as one of the most beautiful road trips in Canada, offering a chance to view landscapes that feel as though they are directly from a postcard.
What To Know Before Traveling Through The Icefields Parkway
Here are some key points to know before visiting and traveling through the Icefields Parkway:
This is a long road trip, and gas stations are generally limited. Make sure to fill up on gas prior to your departure, either at Jasper or Banff. Prepare for the long haul, but also expect to make some stops along the way for photo opportunities.
Not only are gas stations limited, but so are rest stations. This means you should pack up on food, snacks, and water before your trip. Get comfortable and prepare for limited rest options, including restrooms.
Cell service remains incredibly limited during this road trip, and you should plan ahead for this kind of disruption. Some cell phones that are used for GPS may have limited capabilities during stretches of the drive. As a result, ensure you have downloaded maps ahead of time, or you have paper maps that can guide you in the event you become lost.
You will need a National Park Pass in order to travel through this part of the Rockies. This is available for purchase online or at the discovery center along the way.
Weather conditions can change rapidly, even during the warmer summer months. Some stretches of this road trip include high elevations, and even snow is possible with warm weather. Prepare for both cold and warm temperatures, and also dress for these weather conditions that can change in a matter of minutes.
Should you be traveling during the winter months, winter tires are required by law. Winter weather can make this road trip challenging, and visitors are required to abide by these rules or risk incurring significant fines.
This isn’t a road trip for nervous or new drivers. Only those who are confident drivers should take on this road trip. Driving in an unfamiliar location can be complex, especially if cold weather impacts your trip. Snow and ice can make this trip difficult, and your best option, for any season, is to partner with a qualified tour company that can take care of the driving for you.
Plan for extra time, including stops specifically for photos. There are so many incredible photo opportunities to take in along the journey, and you should not plan to rush through this trip. Plan for some extra time spent at photo stops, and ensure you make your trip as enjoyable as possible.
You are likely to come across wildlife, including bears, sheep, elk, mountain goats, and moose. Always stay a safe distance from any wildlife you encounter, and appreciate these animals safely, with binoculars. At times, wildlife may make your journey more difficult, presenting an unexpected delay. As such, never get out of your car to view the wildlife, and instead, keep at least ten school bus lengths away from bears or other larger wildlife. Never, under any circumstances, feed wildlife, as it will likely harm them.
The Best Photo Opportunities Along The Icefields Parkway
Lovers of the great outdoors will be truly overwhelmed by the number of photo opportunities they discover along the Icefields Parkway. Turquoise waters, waterfalls, glacier lakes, limestone caves, and soaring mountaintops are all available for a quick photo stop. Some of the most important stops include:
- Herbert Lake & Hector Lake,
- Bow Lake
- Peyto Lake (Bow Summit)
- Mistaya Canyon
- Columbia Icefield
- Sunwapta Falls
- Athabasca Falls
While the trip can take about four hours to complete without stopping, many guests report having to plan a full day that includes stops at the destinations mentioned above.
Your Icefields Parkway Packing Checklist
Use this checklist for packing and preparing a trip through the Icefields Parkway:
- Begin by purchasing an Icefields Parkway park pass online at the Parks Canada website.
- Ready your vehicle with winter tires (required during the winter season), a full tank of gas, and windshield wiper fluid.
- Check for road closures, delays, or poor weather prior to your departures.
- Bring along plenty of water, snacks, and food to keep you fueled up during the trip.
- Bring along a cell phone, power bank, or traditional camera for the photo opportunities.
- Download maps prior to leaving, or purchase paper maps.
- Bring along a first-aid or emergency kit to manage the risks of vehicle breakdown.
- Comfortable footwear is essential, especially if you plan on doing some exploring during one of your pit stops.
- Plan for cold and warm weather, as high elevations can make weather conditions unpredictable.
- Plan for UV exposure, even in cooler temperatures. This should include sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Should you be road tripping with children, consider bringing along some toys for entertainment.
- Bring along a picnic lunch, and never leave behind trash.
- For anyone who wants to venture beyond lookout points and photo opportunities, bringing along bear spray is a great idea. Learn how to use bear spray prior to purchasing it and keep it handy just in case you have an encounter with wildlife.
The Benefits of Tour Groups
Many guests prefer partnering with a tour company that can handle the driving that comes with exploring the Icefields Parkway. There simply is so much to appreciate along this journey, and driving it yourself can not only be stressful but tiring. Instead, look to a tour company to facilitate ground transportation along the parkway, allowing you to focus on the full enjoyment of your trip.
Many visitors look to rental car agencies to navigate this highway, which is not only costly but sometimes complicated. Instead of having the risk of an accident or some kind of mishap, tour groups take away these complications and instead allow you to focus on more important matters. More importantly, drivers often miss out on the sights that can be experienced during the journey. Skip out on this and instead partner with a tour company that can facilitate complete transportation for you.
