Calgary to Lake Louise
In less than a 2-hour drive from Calgary, we arrive at Lake Louise, Alberta, an alpine village and resort located on the valley floor in the dramatic mountain setting of Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies.
Lake Louise is only 35 miles (56km) down the Trans-Canada Highway west of Banff, which is a 45-minute drive from your hotel accommodations in Banff.
When first exiting the highway, you will see the quaint Lake Louise shopping center to your left and the ski area at Lake Louise Mountain Resort to your right.
The actual lake itself is just 3 miles (5 km) up the mountain from the resort village of Lake Louise. This incredibly beautiful, glacier-fed, mountainous lake is 5,250 feet above sea level (1,600 metres) and perhaps the best known (and most admired) lake in all of Banff National Park.
Lake Louise History and Weather
The turquoise-colored (blue-green) water of Lake Louise consists mostly of meltwater from Victoria Glacier on Mount Victoria. This magnificent snow-covered peak at the end of Lake Louise is named after the former Queen of England. Lake Louise itself was subsequently named after one of Queen Victoria’s five daughters.
Lake Louise weather during the summer months averages in the mid-’60s (18 Celsius). Mornings typically start off frosty and gradually warm to a crisp, cool day. In the winter months, high mountain temperatures can dip as low as -63° F with up to 10 feet of snowfall.
If you are lucky, you may see some Lake Louise wildlife from a distance including cougars, elk, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, plus more than 250 bird species, including the gray jay.
With snow-packed glacier peaks surrounding Lake Louise, wildlife is forced to venture down to lower elevations for food. Black bears and grizzly bears also live around Lake Louise and should only be observed at a safe distance.
Along the edge of Lake Louise, you’ll get close to friendlier wildlife including golden-mantled ground squirrels, chipmunks, Clark’s nutcrackers, and gray jays.
Lake Louise Day Trip Activities
At first arrival on your leisurely morning visit to glacier Lake Louise, you’ll notice the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel, which stands proudly at the lake water’s edge.
Stroll through the delightful grassy courtyard and gardens of Fairmont Lake Louise or meander through the unique Canadian hotel lobby. As a landmark and destination for over 110 years, Fairmont Chateau is recognized for responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.
From Chateau Lake Louise, take a walk around Lake Louise along the Lakeshore Trail footpath. With ever-changing views of peaks around Victoria Glacier and a wide flat trail, this walk will get you away from the crowds and give you a taste of why Lake Louise is named the “Hiking Capital of Canada.”
