Nomadic indigenous tribes used to hunt, camp, and gather plants in this area long before it was designated as Waterton Lakes National Park. In the 1880s, Lt. Thomas Blakiston, who was scouting for a railway passage through the Rocky Mountains, named the three large lakes Waterton, after Charles Waterton, a British naturalist.
Waterton Lakes Park in Alberta, Canada is adjacent to Glacier National Park in Montana, USA. In 1932, the union of both parks represented to friendship and close alliance between Canada and the United States and created the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park, the world’s first peace park.

UNESCO World Heritage Site
In 1979, because over half of the plant species in Alberta are found in Waterton Lakes National Park, it became the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Then, in 1995, Waterton Glacier International Peace Park was identified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Surrounded by the magnificent Rocky Mountains, Upper Waterton Lake, Middle Waterton Lake, and a chain of smaller freshwater mountain lakes are the most unique features of Waterton Park.

Crafted from cedar planking and sturdy oak frames, the historical MV International Waterton Lake cruise boat was built in 1927. This passenger vessel is currently the oldest one operating in Canada and celebrated 90 years of service in 2017.
The Waterton Lake MV International cruise ship can carry 126 passengers and has been maintained using the traditional techniques of shipbuilding for continued maintenance and repairs.
