Mexico’s Spectacular Copper Canyon In The Sierra Madre Mountains
Mexico’s Chihuahua-Pacifico rail line through Copper Canyon offers some of the most breathtaking and naturally isolated canyons in all of Mexico.
In fact, this 400 mile modern marvel of engineering through Mexico’s Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Mountains rises from sea level to almost 8000 feet!
Initially conceived in 1872, Mexico’s Copper Canyon rail route was intended to provide the shortest route for transporting goods from Kansas City to the Pacific Ocean. The inherent difficulties of engineering and building through such a mountainous region (plus the Mexican Revolution and World War II) delayed the project’s completion until 1961. The final cost of building Mexico’s rail route through Copper Canyon was over $100 million U.S.
Copper Canyon, Mexico
There are over 25,000 square miles of canyons in Mexico’s Sierra Madre Mountains. The five major canyons are collectively known as Copper Canyon, which is four times the size of the Grand Canyon in the U.S. Operated by Ferrocaril Mexicano the Copper Canyon rail line passes through 86 tunnels and crosses over 38 bridges as it travels en route from Creel to El Fuerte Mexico.
