About the Chihuahua-Pacifico Railroad
Initially conceived in 1872, Chihauhua-Pacifico Railroad, Mexico’s Copper Canyon rail route, was intended to provide the shortest route for transporting goods from Kansas City to the Pacific Ocean.
The inherent difficulties of engineering and building through such a mountainous region (plus the Mexican Revolution and World War II) delayed the project’s completion until 1961.
The final cost of building Mexico’s rail route through Copper Canyon was over $100 million U.S. dollars, which is nearly one billion in today’s dollars. Learn more about the history of the Chihauhua-Pacifico Railroad here.
