Conchal Beach Costa Rica
Watching the sun set into the ocean is one of the most emotionally powerful experiences a person can have.
In recent studies, people detailed intense feelings of awe and nostalgia while watching a sunset on the beach. Many experienced “profound” emotional restoration. The setting sun on the Pacific Ocean is a powerful psychological symbol—one that, for many, represents a safe haven or otherworldly beauty.
One project from 2023 reports that “sunsets trigger significant boosts in people’s feelings of awe” for 100% of participants, and their elevated mood lasts for several hours.
When it comes to sunsets, one beach has earned near universal acclaim: Playa Conchal, Costa Rica.
What Is Costa Rica’s Conchal Beach?
Conchal Beach sits in a tropical climate zone, making its weather warm and fairly humid year-round.
It’s known for its unique, pearlescent beach floor, composed of shells rather than sand.
Where Is Playa Conchal, Costa Rica?
Playa Conchal (or, Conchal Beach) is on the Pacific shore on the coast of Central America. It’s part of the Costa Rican province of Guanacaste.
Best Things To Do In Conchal Beach, Costa Rica
1. Draw, Paint & Photograph Shells
Conchal beach is known for its unique shoreline. Rather than a sandbar receding into the sea, the ground where land meets ocean is 98% shells.
Small, multicolored, white, and iridescent shells, some fragmented and smoothed by the tide, comprise every square foot of ground on the beach.
While it might be tempting to break out a new box for a shell collection, it’s actually illegal to remove shells from Playa Conchal.
Do Not Collect Shells
Every year, The National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) repeats its message, hoping to get it heard by this year’s wave of beachgoers.
The Costa Rica News reports the SINAC statement warning tourists and visitors against “remov[ing] shells, stones and other resources from the beaches, since they are practices that affect natural ecosystems.”
Empty shells are reused by creatures like hermit crabs, making them an important part of the life cycle. Shells that aren’t empty are living creatures.
As a result, NIACC emphasizes, “The extraction of these products and by-products from wildlife is considered illegal trafficking.”
Unlawful wildlife trafficking is a big deal. In 2023, security at the Juan Santamaría International Airport seized 2000+ pounds of shells from travelers.
Seizure isn’t the worst potential penalty either.
According to a spokesperson for The Wildlife Conservation Law, “whoever captures, extracts and transfers wildlife can be penalized up to 30 base salaries.” That said, WCL clarifies, “the most serious thing is that it alters the ecological process of marine life.”
Art & Meditation
Since collecting the shells at Conchal Beach is illegal, what’s the best way to enjoy them?
One great option is to engage with them artistically. Shell and seaside photography can be beautiful, and there are free online tutorials if you’re looking to try it out. Or, bring your sketchbook, pencils, or paints to the shoreline to bring the shimmering shells to life on the canvas.
Shells can also be a great, tactile touch point for meditation, creating a new kind of focus for chi energy. Bringing shells into a meditation practice is another great way to connect with the natural beauty of Playa Conchal without removing the shells from their home.

To experience the expanse of the coastline itself, visitors can rent and ride ATVs, dune buggies, or horses along the shores.
