Costa Rica Ecotourism Information
For nearly 7 decades (since 1949 when they abolished the military) Costa Rica has remained steadfast in its efforts to preserve its rainforests and the country’s indigenous flora, fauna, and wildlife.
This tiny country of nearly 5million people has made the preservation of its natural heritage a top priority. Costa Rica used its former military budget to preserve and protect almost one quarter (approximately 23%) of the country within numerous National Parks, wildlife refuges and biological reserves, including:
- Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge (with Rio Frio boat cruise)
- Arenal Volcano and hot springs
- Guanacaste beaches & dry forests
Costa Rica now enjoys a well-deserved reputation for enlightened conservation and is world renowned as the “Jewel of Central America”. Sustainable ecotourism plays a significant role in helping to fund Costa Rica’s ongoing preservation efforts. Tourism is now Costa Rica’s number one industry.
San Jose Costa Rica Information
Centrally located, the charming cosmopolitan city of San Jose (the capital), which the locals fondly refer to as Chepe, is the cultural hub of Costa Rica and the country’s largest city. San Jose is situated at 3800+ feet above sea level and this high elevation is the main reason this equatorial city remains so temperate. After a brief civil war in the early 1800’s San Jose was named the nation’s capital. Surrounded by rich soil and introduced to coffee growing in the early 1900s, San Jose prospered and is now home to nearly 300,000 Ticos (as Costa Ricans prefer to call themselves). Ecotourism is the country’s prime industry and San Jose is resplendent for its tourism services and world-class hotel accommodations.
Poas & Arenal Volcano Information
Poas Volcano is world famous for its two crater lakes, one of which is over a mile wide! Near Poas Volcano is Escallonia Cloud Forest Trail.
Arenal Volcano is considered a very young volcano that first erupted in 1968. Retaining its cone shape, Arenal remained quite active for the first 30 years but has since quieted. Caravan Costa Rica tour guests spend 2 nights in La Fortuna near the base of Arenal Volcano, where they can witness Arenal’s soft lava flow from the safety and comfort of the area’s natural hot springs.
Guanacaste Costa Rica Information
Renowned for its beautiful beaches, Guanacaste is Costa Rica’s most sparsely populated province located on the Pacific Northwest coast. It is also home to Leatherback Turtles National Park where the endangered leatherback turtles (some as big as 1500 pounds) return annually between September and March to nest and lay their eggs.
Manuel Antonio Costa Rica Information
Although this is Costa Rica’s smallest national park, Manuel Antonia boasts unbelievable virgin rainforests and phenomenal Pacific coast beaches, earning Forbe’s accolades as one of the World’s Top 12 most beautiful national parks!
