Playa Tamarindo Costa Rica

Tamarindo, Costa Rica is one of the most popular beach destinations in the world. Discover what makes it so unique, and whether it’s worth a trip.

What Are Costa Rica’s Tamarindo Beaches?

Tamarindo is a town on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast known for its beautiful beach. It’s within Guanacaste Province. Costa Rica as a whole is in the Tropics.

From December through April is the town’s dry season. Rainy season runs June-November, with September and October being the rainiest months.

Tamarindo is hot year-round. The average daily high temperature range is 85-86°F (29-30°C). The nightly low temperature range is 65°F-75°F (18°C - 24°C).

The town of Tamarindo has an interesting history. For centuries, all the way up until the 1980s, it was a small fishing village, unbothered by the outside world.

In 1985, businessman Russell Wenrich moved to Tamarindo. He used some of the beaches as a location for the film Endless Summer II (1994), leading to a huge tourism boom that’s still ongoing.

Fun fact: Tamarindo is located on the route of one of the world’s largest whale migrations!

Surfing, Sunsets & Sealife In Playa Tamarindo

Tamarindo, Costa Rica offers the opportunity for the beach vacation of a lifetime. Here are some of the best ways to spend your time in this extraordinary town.

Surf, Swim & Snorkel

Tamarindo’s beacheside tidepools are a snorkeler’s paradise, while Playa Tamarindo’s pristine, easy waters make it a perfect swimming spot for families with kids.

Intermediate and advanced surfers get a kick out of Playa Langosta, enjoying the challenge of its powerful, consistent waves, and its clean reef brakes.

Explore Costa Rica’s Tropical Forest From Its Canopy

Tamarindo is home to one of the few remaining tropical dry forests on Earth: a lush garden-like ecosystem filled with colorful macaws, playful Capuchin monkeys, and rare flora like the swan orchid.

Visitors can experience this unique biome from its treetops, taking hanging bridge tours, zipline excursions, and even hang gliding adventures for a true bird’s eye view.

Kayak The Bioluminescent Mangrove Estuary

Tamarindo offers wildlife experiences unlike any other place on Earth. One of the best is an immersive exploration of the rare mangrove forests on a kayak tour of Tamarindo’s estuary.

Even better are tours after dark. Particularly during the moon’s “new moon” phase, guides can take kayaks to coves and harbors with an eerie, almost mystical blue glow.

The shimmering, neon blue waters are bioluminescent. They’re filled with small, blue glowing creatures, like underwater fireflies.

A Dining Scene With Something For Everyone

No matter how big a travel group is, everyone will find something to their taste in Tamarindo.

Little Lucha Street Tacos, a popular street food vendor serving up—what else?—tacos! Enjoy complex spice profiles and surprising takes on a dish you know and love.

Derecho Sagrado, a coffee shop offering fresh java brewed from extraordinarily flavorful beans, all locally sourced and enriched by their time growing in the nation’s unique tropical soil.

NOI Bistro, a brunch spot renowned for its authentic, flavorful gallo pinto, the national dish of Costa Rica.

L’ Estanco El Jardin Escondido, an upscale restaurant praised for its phenomenal chef’s original dishes, its welcoming atmosphere, and attentive service.

Kalokairi Restaurant, a five-star fine dining establishment, specializing in international fusion cuisine. If you’re a fan of seafood, it’s a surefire hit.

Pandeli Tamarindo, a Mediterranean breakfast, coffee, and dessert bar, with fresh ingredients baked into simple elegant meals, served under the island’s blue skies.

Hot Springs & Health Spas

Costa Rica’s natural hot springs flow into rejuvenating spa baths, both in Tamarindo and its neighboring towns in Guanacaste Province. For more heavenly relaxation, try a luxurious massage, manicure, or spa skincare treatment right on the beach.

Art, Music & Nightlife

For a club kid (or kid-at-heart!) Tamarindo has plenty of spots to dance the night away.

Pangas Beach Club has a lively, luau-like atmosphere; it’s almost the opposite of Rumors Tamarindo, a sizzling club where live DJs amp the party up all night!

Romantics might enjoy Ocho Beach Club, a jazzy, open-air beachside spot, ideal for sunset dances.
Or, they might head to Kinky Tamarindo, the neon pink heart of the gay club scene.

For lower key ambiance, enjoy the live music while perusing local artisan wares at Tamarindo Moonlight Market.

Take Your Loved Ones To A Place They’ll Never Forget

Tamarindo is a place of balance. A trip there can be equal parts relaxing on the beach, watching stunning sunsets, and once-in-a-lifetime eco adventures.

Enjoy thrills, nature’s beauty, and rejuvenation, all in one destination. It’s a perfect spot for a trip with your family, a romantic getaway, or a post-retirement adventure.

Top Costa Rica Trip Tips: Tamarindo Vacation FAQs

There’s a lot to consider before traveling. For more in-depth insights while planning a trip to Costa Rica, we invite you to read our guide “Costa Rica, Natural Paradise: Travel Tips & FAQs.”

Here are a few of the answers you might be looking for about a Tamarindo trip specifically.

Do I Need A Passport To Visit Tamarindo, Costa Rica?

Yes. Unless you are a citizen of Costa Rica, you will need a passport.

What Is A Smart Budget For A Trip To Tamarindo?

Costa Rica isn’t the most expensive destination. But, accommodations, transit, and meals generally cost slightly more than they do in other Latin American countries.

Moreover, due to its popularity among surfers, Tamarindo is a bit pricier than other Costa Rica regions.

Travel surveys indicate the average person spends ~$2,500 - $3,000 on a one-week trip to Costa Rica.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to bring that cost down, from off-season travel, to package deals to scouring travel websites for discounts.

For more insights, read “Tour Costa Rica On A Budget—Fully Guided.”

When Is The Best Time To Go To Playa Tamarindo?

Visit during peak season if you want less humidity, calmer waves, and maximum sunshine. Wait until the off season if you want lower prices and smaller crowds.

Peak Season Is Dry Season

Peak tourist season is December - April. It’s the dry season, and Tamarindo’s skies are almost guaranteed to be clear and blue. It’s also hot without being as humid.

December - April is also better for those who want to sail or surf on gentler waves

Off Season Is Rainy Season

The off season is the rainy season. May is a “shoulder” month, and the rainy season starts in earnest in June. It ends around. The end of November.

Off-season travel is great, as it’s easy to find steep discount rates on hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

It’s also a popular season among surfers due to the powerful waves. In fact, the Circuito Nacional de Surf (Costa Rica National Surf Circuit), one of the largest international surf competitions, is always held in June.

If you visit during the rainy season, you’ll find heavy rainfall and mild storms, most afternoons and evenings. Certain sailing excursions, kayaking tours, and hiking trails are more likely to be closed due to weather.

Fortunately, it’s usually sunny and warm in the mornings and early afternoons. If you’re a morning person, or you want to explore the rainforest at its most lush, visiting during the summer and Autumn months is worthwhile.

How Do I Stay Safe In Tamarindo, Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is a very safe country to visit. It has an incredibly low crime rate, and the culture is known for being friendly and warm. Since 2024, Tamarindo Beach has earned a Blue Flag, awarded for exceptionally clean, pollution-free and sustainable beaches.

Stay alert, avoid scams, and bring bottled water if you’ll be spending a lot of time in rural areas or on hikes. For more safety tips, check out, “Is it Safe to Travel to Costa Rica Right Now?

Travel Tips & FAQs

These are only the first 25 Travel Tips. Read all 80 Travel Tips

Drivers License

You can drive with your normal driver's license in Costa Rica for 3 months after your entry into Costa Rica. There is no such thing as an international driver's license, although there is an international driving permit which you can buy for $10 at an American Automobile Association office. These permits are valid for one year after date of issue, and are valid only when accompanied by a valid driver's license. It is not necessary to buy an international driving permit for a visit of under 3 months to Costa Rica.

Preparing for the Tropics

It is recommended to bring at least one pair of quick-dry pants and one quick-dry shirt. The quick-dry pants that zip at the knee to convert into shorts are particularly popular. Be sure to also bring a sweater or jacket for the cooler night temperatures. Caravan does not make product endorsements, but many feel that Avon Skin So Soft oil (not cream), or Avon's Expedition anti-mosquito spray is effective protection against mosquito bites in the jungle. Caravan does not endorse any vitamin, but please note that Central American pharmacies sell 500 milligram Vitamin B-1 tablets, a non-prescription vitamin, as "anti-mosquito" pills. Many people take Vitamin B-1 pills and eat garlic for about two weeks prior to and during their visits to the jungle because they believe that the smell of Vitamin B-1 and garlic repels mosquitoes. If you believe this may be of value, consult your doctor for further information on Vitamin B-1 and garlic. Many also avoid eating bananas in the rainforest, as it is believed that this smell attracts mosquitoes. Also, it is wise to wear light-weight quick-dry long-sleeved pants and shirts in these tropical areas.

Customs Duties for Personal Items in Costa Rica

There is no customs duties charge for your personal items in Costa Rica.

Customs Duties for Items Purchased in Costa Rica

When returning to the U.S., U.S. customs allows each person an exemption of customs taxes on up to $800.00 U.S. worth of Costa Rican goods that are in your possession and personally accompany you. Items to be sent later are not included in your $800 duty-free exemption. If two family members are traveling together, they may combine their customs exemption. For instance, a married couple will have a total $1,600.00 customs exemption. A flat duty rate of 3% is applied to the first $1,000 of goods per person beyond the $800 per person exemption. The duty-free exemption applies ONLY IF you have not used any exemption allowance whatsoever in the past 30 days. For instance, if you have made another international trip within the past 30 days, and used even a small exemption of $10, you would not get the $800 exemption. For this reason, sometimes it is best not to use the exemption if (1) the value of your goods is very low, and (2) you are planning to use the exemption on another trip within 30 days. Duty on items you mail home to yourself is waived if the value is $200 or less.

Costa Rica Immigration

After exiting your plane, you will first arrive at the immigration desk, and present your passport and a Costa Rica immigration form. (This form is provided to you by your airplane. On the form, you will write your name, passport number, nationality, occupation, and the reason for your visit - tourism or business.) After you are approved in the immigration computer, you take the escalator or elevator downstairs to the baggage claim area.

San Jose, Costa Rica Baggage Claim

When you arrive at the baggage claim area, you will find free luggage carts and clean restrooms. You can pick up a free map here at the Tourist Information booth.

Costa Rica Customs

After you pick up your suitcase at baggage claim, you must stop at the customs table and put your suitcase on a conveyor belt through the scanning machine. This takes about ten seconds. Then the customs agent will signal you to exit the customs area.

Airport Porter Tips

If an airport porter assists you with your suitcases, please tip the airport porter $2 per person or more in the United States, and $1 per person or more in Costa Rica, depending on the amount of your luggage.

Caravan Does Not Arrange Airline Transportation

Airfare is not included or sold by Caravan Tours. Reserve your flight to San Jose, Costa Rica (airport code SJO), and not San Jose, California (airport code SJC). Try to schedule flights with as few connections as possible. If you have connecting flights, please allow enough time between flights so you can comfortably reach your connecting gates.

Activities in Costa Rica if Arriving a Day Early or Staying a Day Longer

Some clients participate in rafting tours or zip-line canopy tours. Caravan feels that these activities sometimes can be risky and dangerous. Others sign up for tours of Lankaster Gardens to see flowers, or horseback riding trips. There are travel desks at the hotels and numerous travel agents in San Jose, Fortuna who can arrange activities for you if you wish.

Fishing in Costa Rica

You can charter a deep sea fishing boat while you are staying on the Pacific Ocean. Quepos, has world class deep sea fishing. Chartered deep sea fishing boats are available for prices from $500 to $1,000 or more a day. If you decide to go fishing, please wear your life jackets at all times.

International Travel with Minors

If you are travelling with children under 18 years old without both parents or legal guardians, carry a notarized letter of authorization signed by the missing parent(s) or guardian(s). A notarized birth certificate showing only one parent, a parent’s death certificate, or a court order of child custody may also be permissible. Failure to have proper documentation could result in denial of boarding by the airline, due to international child protection laws.

Safety in San Jose

As in many major tourist cities around the world, there are professional pickpockets and petty theft in San Jose; so please be careful when walking in the city. If you wish to explore the city center of San Jose, please be careful crossing the street as cars often do not stop at red lights and there are very steep gutters. Please also watch the sidewalks carefully, as there are often large holes and missing manhole covers. Caravan recommends against using the public buses. When traveling by taxi, only travel with the official taxis that work with your hotel. Please use caution if you walk in San Jose after dark. At any time of day you should not walk in a small area of downtown San Jose called the zona roja (red light district).
