Boasting a perfect stratovolcano cone shape, Arenal Volcano is a young volcano (less than 7,500 years old) and is located within Arenal Volcano National Park less than 10 miles from La Fortuna Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Poas Volcano Facts
UPDATE - Poas volcano, which is near San Jose, is not currently part of our Caravan Costa Rica tour due to recent volcanic eruptions. Although it is a major tourist attraction, the last major eruption was as recent as September of 2019.
Located just an hour and a half from San Jose Costa Rica, Parque Nacional Volcan Poas (Poas Volcano National Park) is one of Costa Rica’s most established parks. It’s also home to the country’s most famous, and perhaps most visited active volcanoes.
At nearly 8,900 feet (2,713 metres) above sea level, Poas Volcano is breathtaking to behold and easily accessible, with a lookout just 300 feet from the crater rim. The best time to visit the Poas volcano is in the morning (before the clouds roll in) and anytime during the dry season between late December and April.

- Poas Volcano crater is nearly a mile wide (1.6 km)!
- The crater lake is filled with hot, very acidic, molten sulphur
- It is the world’s largest, most acidic volcanic lake
- The crater is also nearly 1,000 feet (305 metres) deep
- Frequent erupting geysers can reach up to 800+ feet high
- It is considered the largest active volcano in the world
- It is surrounded by numerous fumaroles emitting hot sulfuric gases
- Poas Volcano has 2 summit crater lakes – Botos Crater Lake & Botos Lake
- Botos Crater Lake is filled with cold, jade-colored, rain-fed water
- Botos Lake is surrounded by cloud forests
Lush tropical rainforests are found at lower levels around Poas Volcano, which is also home to unique cloud forests (including nearby Escallonia Cloud Forest Trail). You’ll also find dwarfed, stunted forests and ferns at higher levels.
