Costa Rica Canopy Tours & More!
The travel itinerary for our Caravan Costa Rica eco tours includes many of Costa Rica’s most unforgettable “must see” locations including wildlife refuges, national parks, volcanoes, and biological reserves.
Begin in San Jose Costa Rica
From your first stop in San Jose (the capital), we travel north past the cloud forest near Poas Volcano and on to La Fortuna near Arenal volcano. The tour then heads west to the lowlands of Guanacaste and then south along the coast to Manuel Antonio National Park, before ending up back in San Jose.
Escallonia Cloud Forest
High humidity, less rain, and low lying clouds contribute to the fog-like conditions in Costa Rica’s Escallonia cloud forest, which is a natural habitat for orchids, ferns, and many species of tropical hummingbirds. Escallonia cloud forest is a favorite tourist attraction and located near Poas Volcano National Park.
Another must see attraction (weather permitting) on Caravan’s Costa Rica eco tour is Poas Volcano, with its two unique crater lakes. Lake Botos to the south is an inactive crater with cold clear lake water. To the north is Laguna Caliente (the hot lagoon), a mile wide volcanic crater filled with water so acidic that no plant or aquatic life can survive.
Wildlife Rescue Center
Heading north to La Fortuna, the tour also includes a stop at the world famous Wildlife Rescue Center, a not-for-profit organization that rescues wild birds and exotic animals, helps them rehabilitate and then releases them back into the wild.
Sarchi Oxcart Factory
Eco tour guests also get to visit the very popular Sarchi Oxcart Factory. Sarchi oxcarts are created in the oldest ox cart factory in Costa Rica where artisans hand make and hand decorate oxcarts that are still widely used throughout the country. Visit this UNESCO page to learn more about Ox herding and Oxcart Traditions in Costa Rica.
Arenal Volcano & Bali Hot Springs
Located near La Fortuna, just 56 miles from San Jose, is Arenal Volcano, a young, cone shaped volcano. It erupted back in 1968 and for a while, Arenal Volcano was considered one of the world’s top ten most active volcanoes. Its volcanic activity has been steadily decreasing in recent years. Caravan Costa Rica eco tour guests can enjoy the spectacular view of Arenal Volcano’s active lava flow from the safety of their Fortuna hotel. There’s even time on the tour to leisurely enjoy the 25 natural hot spring thermal pools at Baldi Hot Springs Resort.
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge River Cruise
Just north of La Fortuna, your Caravan Costa Rica eco tour includes a guided boat cruise on the Rio Frio through Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge on the Nicaraguan border. You will have ample opportunity to photograph and view up close, the many protected animal, aquatic, and bird species within the refuge. Many of our Caravan eco tour guests have spotted everything from water walking lizards and black turtles to caimans, howler monkeys, and many unique and rare migratory birds.
Hanging Bridges Tour
Heading west to Guanacaste Province, the tour makes a stop at Mistico Park, with time to explore the famous Arenal Hanging Bridges. Mistico Park is a 243-hectare wildlife reserve with mature wet rainforest. The Hanging Bridges features two miles of mountain trails with 9 stationary bridges and 6 suspension bridges.
Carara Biological Reserve & National Park
The Guanacaste Province part of this Costa Rica eco tour includes a bird watching cruise on the Tarcoles River (the River of Crocodiles)! Carara National Park is part of the Central Pacific Conservation Area. This biological reserve is a sanctuary for indigenous wildlife and many migrating birds, as well as tropical birds like the Scarlet Macaw.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Located on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio is easily one of Costa Rica’s most famous tourist attractions. Manuel Antonio is this country’s smallest National Park but still managed to make Forbes list as one of the 12 most beautiful national parks in the world, complete with exotic toucans, lizards, howler monkeys, and the 2-toed (and 3-toed) sloths.
Leatherback Turtles National Park Guanacaste
Established in 1991, Leatherback Turtles National Park is a natural fit as part of Caravan’s Costa Rica eco tours. Leatherback turtles can grow as long as six feet and weigh up to 1100 pounds or more. Along with the Olive Ridley and Hawksbill turtles, Leatherback turtles use this area of Costa Rica as their annual nesting grounds and each year thousands of turtles return here to nest…a truly amazing sight to see!

Why Travel with Caravan?
Why Travel with Caravan?
Excellence Since 1952
You can trust our years of experience with tours of superb quality and excellent value. Caravan has enjoyed the same family management and ownership since 1952.
Caravan's Proud History
In 1965, Roger Mudd hosted a two-hour CBS TV special on Caravan Tours. This TV production took about one month to make and was so successful it inspired the 1968 romantic comedy movie “If it’s Tuesday this must be Belgium.” In the early 50’s the Mayor of Dublin presented Caravan with the Key to Dublin for bringing the first American tour to the city after WWII. Since then, Caravan has been recognized as a pioneer in travel. You can trust in our stability, experience and dedication to quality.
Stay at park lodges, scenic resorts, and excellent hotels in great locations. See hotel descriptions on each tour page.
In Costa Rica, Panama, and Guatemala, Caravan includes all meals. For USA and Canada tours, included meals are listed on each itinerary page. In Latin America, bottled water is provided free on the motorcoach and purified water is provided at the meals.
Enjoy complete sightseeing with more visits, extra features, and local guides.
Fully Guided by Tour Directors
All tours conducted from start to finish by professional tour directors, who are fluent in English, experienced, and fun.
Caravan includes all activities listed in the tour itinerary page. Caravan does not sell any optional activities which can add hundreds of dollars to your tour price. Your free time is scheduled in great settings where there is no need to buy additional expensive activities.
Caravan will not bring you to overpriced shops in exchange for payments. Caravan gives you ample opportunity and time for great shopping, and the freedom to choose where and when to shop.
Great Value, Book Early
Caravan’s strong buying power gives you great vacations at prices much lower than you can find anywhere. In a typical year, most of our tours sell out quickly. Book early for the date you prefer and the best air fare.
How does Caravan Tours sell these tours for such a low cost?
Caravan delivers volume to our suppliers, who in turn reward us with their very best prices. We in turn pass these savings on to you, and you reward us by buying our tours. As volume continues to rise, we then receive even better prices from our suppliers, and we pass even greater savings on to you. This year our tours are better than ever.
