Costa Rica Canopy Tours & More!
The travel itinerary for our Caravan Costa Rica eco tours includes many of Costa Rica’s most unforgettable “must see” locations including wildlife refuges, national parks, volcanoes, and biological reserves.
Begin in San Jose Costa Rica
From your first stop in San Jose (the capital), we travel north past the cloud forest near Poas Volcano and on to La Fortuna near Arenal volcano. The tour then heads west to the lowlands of Guanacaste and then south along the coast to Manuel Antonio National Park, before ending up back in San Jose.
Escallonia Cloud Forest
High humidity, less rain, and low lying clouds contribute to the fog-like conditions in Costa Rica’s Escallonia cloud forest, which is a natural habitat for orchids, ferns, and many species of tropical hummingbirds. Escallonia cloud forest is a favorite tourist attraction and located near Poas Volcano National Park.
Poas Volcano
Another must see attraction (weather permitting) on Caravan’s Costa Rica eco tour is Poas Volcano, with its two unique crater lakes. Lake Botos to the south is an inactive crater with cold clear lake water. To the north is Laguna Caliente (the hot lagoon), a mile wide volcanic crater filled with water so acidic that no plant or aquatic life can survive.
Wildlife Rescue Center
Heading north to La Fortuna, the tour also includes a stop at the world famous Wildlife Rescue Center, a not-for-profit organization that rescues wild birds and exotic animals, helps them rehabilitate and then releases them back into the wild.
Sarchi Oxcart Factory
Eco tour guests also get to visit the very popular Sarchi Oxcart Factory. Sarchi oxcarts are created in the oldest ox cart factory in Costa Rica where artisans hand make and hand decorate oxcarts that are still widely used throughout the country. Visit this UNESCO page to learn more about Ox herding and Oxcart Traditions in Costa Rica.
Arenal Volcano & Bali Hot Springs
Located near La Fortuna, just 56 miles from San Jose, is Arenal Volcano, a young, cone shaped volcano. It erupted back in 1968 and for a while, Arenal Volcano was considered one of the world’s top ten most active volcanoes. Its volcanic activity has been steadily decreasing in recent years. Caravan Costa Rica eco tour guests can enjoy the spectacular view of Arenal Volcano’s active lava flow from the safety of their Fortuna hotel. There’s even time on the tour to leisurely enjoy the 25 natural hot spring thermal pools at Baldi Hot Springs Resort.
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge River Cruise
Just north of La Fortuna, your Caravan Costa Rica eco tour includes a guided boat cruise on the Rio Frio through Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge on the Nicaraguan border. You will have ample opportunity to photograph and view up close, the many protected animal, aquatic, and bird species within the refuge. Many of our Caravan eco tour guests have spotted everything from water walking lizards and black turtles to caimans, howler monkeys, and many unique and rare migratory birds.
Hanging Bridges Tour
Heading west to Guanacaste Province, the tour makes a stop at Mistico Park, with time to explore the famous Arenal Hanging Bridges. Mistico Park is a 243-hectare wildlife reserve with mature wet rainforest. The Hanging Bridges features two miles of mountain trails with 9 stationary bridges and 6 suspension bridges.
Carara Biological Reserve & National Park
The Guanacaste Province part of this Costa Rica eco tour includes a bird watching cruise on the Tarcoles River (the River of Crocodiles)! Carara National Park is part of the Central Pacific Conservation Area. This biological reserve is a sanctuary for indigenous wildlife and many migrating birds, as well as tropical birds like the Scarlet Macaw.
