History of Bryce Canyon National Park UT
A Bryce Canyon tour is part of our Caravan Grand Canyon tours mainly because Bryce Park is such an amazing tourist attraction with a fantastic and colorful history.
Named after a Scottish immigrant Ebenezer Bryce, Bryce Canyon National Park was established in 1928.
This area of southern Utah consists of numerous naturally eroded, horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the sandstone walls of the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau.
These unusual naturally carved shapes are called hoodoos and nowhere else in the world can such a collection and concentration of hoodoos be found as the hoodoos at Bryce National Park.
Bryce Canyon National Park tours feature the Paunsaugunt Plateau where gravel, rocks, and dirt carried by heavy rain run-off over thousands of years have eroded the landscape into steep slopes and tall thin ridges called fins.
Over time, the fins eventually eroded into the spires and pinnacles we’ve come to recognize as Bryce hoodoos. As many of the Bryce hoodoos eventually weaken and fall to the hills and valley floor below, they add bright colors to Bryce Canyon’s unique landscape.
