Lake Powell Facts
Lake Powell is located on the Arizona-Utah border and was named after John Wesley Powell, the 19th century explorer. Lake Powell is actually the second largest man-made reservoir in the USA after Lake Mead.
Lake Powell Reservoir was created when the Glen Canyon dam was completed across the Colorado River in 1966 and Glen Canyon was flooded. Once the Colorado River began to back up it took over 11 years for Lake Powell to rise to its current elevation.
Glen Canyon Dam itself rises to a height of 710 feet. This area is now managed by the National Park Service and has since become a hugely popular vacation destination attracting over two million visitors each year.
