Montezuma Castle Facts
Montezuma Castle Arizona, which is not actually a castle, is a series of ancient, well-preserved cliff dwellings (an early apartment complex) that were built and lived in by the Sinagua as early as 1100 AD.
The ruins of Montezuma Castle span over 4,000 square feet and were not discovered until the 1860s. The “Castle” was inaccurately named after a real Aztec emperor, Montezuma, who was actually born almost half a century after the cliff dwellings were abandoned.
Archeologists believe that for some unknown reason the Sinagua abandoned the pre-historic high-rise dwellings around 1425 AD, after having lived in them for over three centuries!
Montezuma Castle consists of twenty rooms spread over five stories and is carved directly out of the limestone cliffs about 90 feet above the canyon floor: not far from the existing town of Camp Verde in Arizona.
Montezuma Castle Arizona is amazingly well preserved, but nearly all the artifacts it may have housed were looted in the early 20th century.
Most of the artifacts from the Sinagua people have since been discovered in a second, even larger castle structure (called Castle A), which was discovered in 1933.
Unfortunately, very little remains of the original Castle A structure except for the original stone foundations.
Montezuma National Monument
Theodore Roosevelt declared the ruins of Montezuma Castle a National Monument in December of 1906.
Montezuma Castle Arizona is now part of an 860-acre national park and attracts nearly half a million visitors each year.
