Guatemala Tikal Mayan Ruins Tour
Walk the ancient Mayan city of Tikal and explore Guatemala Tikal ruins, including ancient temples and other Mayan Tikal structures, during our fully escorted Caravan Guatemala Tour.
Tikal, which archaeologists believe dates back to as early as 700 BC, is the largest known ancient Mayan city that flourished for over 1500 years. Tikal is distinctly different from Chichén Itzá and Uxmal (two other ancient Guatemalan Mayan sites), mainly because the Tikal ruins are surrounded by dense jungle.
On the strength of its military and active trade economy, the Mayan city of Tikal prospered and at its height boasted an estimated population of perhaps 100,000 Mayan people or more. Then mysteriously, around 900 AD, this ancient Mayan city was virtually deserted and over the ensuing centuries, the Guatemalan jungle overran its magnificent temples and other ancient Mayan Tikal structures.
In the 1840’s the lost Mayan ruins of Tikal were found by European explorers and has since become one of the world’s busiest and most important archaeological research sites. Many of the Tikal ruins remain unexplored; who knows what secrets are left to be excavated, and what else we will learn about this ancient and amazing Mayan culture of Guatemala.
