12 Unmissable Things To Do In Flores, Guatemala
The naturalist Jay Griffiths once wrote, “The silencing of the rainforests is a double deforestation, not only of trees, but a deforestation of the mind’s music, medicine and knowledge.” That music of the mind is a living symphony in the tropical town of Flores, Guatemala.
Flores rests on Lake Peten Itza, a freshwater basin that gives life to one of the most lush, biodiverse rainforests on the planet. It’s also the cradle of civilization on the American continents. There are 27 sites of ancient civil life, culture, and architecture preserved in the region—many dating back thousands of years.
Today, Flores is the home of the Itza people, a cultural hub for many others in Latin America, and a bustling center of wildlife conservation. It’s not surprising the town draws in over 150,000 visitors from across the globe each year!
If you’re thinking you might be one of them, plan your itinerary wisely. There are plenty of activities you wouldn’t want to miss on your Flores, Guatemala adventure.
Where Is Isla de Flores, Petén, Guatemala?
Flores is located on an island within Lake Petén Itzá. It’s in the tropics, in the Department of Petén in northern Guatemala.
1. Explore The Ancient Maya City of Tikal (Best Day Trip)
Tikal National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a little under 40 miles out from Flores, preserving and protecting the Tikal Ruins. The Tikal Ruins are ancient pyramids, temples, places, and tombs covering over 200 sq. miles.
Visitors can explore, immerse themselves in the ancient artworks, and, during permitted times, even climb some of the pyramids. If your family’s in Flores, a day trip to Tikal is one you wouldn’t want to skip.
2. Swim & Boat On Lake Petén Itza In Flores, Guatemala
Lago Petén Itzá is a beautiful scene for all kinds of water activities. Families can swim, kayak, take boat tours, or just enjoy the lakeshore. For extra fun, take a flying leap into the lake on Jorge’s Rope Swing!
3. Learn To Cook Authentic Maya Pepián
Pepián is a popular meaty, spicy soup, and it’s a staple dinner in Guatemala’s Mayan-Spanish culture. In Flores, indigenous chefs teach visitors the authentic, traditional methods of cooking pepián, passed down across generations for centuries.
The experience is delicious. And, like all knowledge, it’s a gift that keeps on giving.
4. Enjoy Dining On Kak’ik, Garanchas, & Rellenitos de Plátano
Speaking of food, you won’t want to miss trying some Kak’ik, a traditional Q’eqchi’ Maya turkey stew. Or Garanchas, a classic Guatemalan street food that’s a “cousin” of the Mexican taco.
And, for dessert, try rellenitos de plátano, sweet fried plantain. You can find all of these dishes served at different, popular restaurants in Flores, including Maple y Tocino and Restaurante Maracuyá.
5. Walk The Skyway In Ixpanpajul Nature Park
Ixpanpajul Nature Park is the best place to experience Flores’ tropical rainforest. Visitors can tour the trees’ canopies by crossing raised “skyway” bridges. Few adventures can beat seeing wild monkeys at eye level—nor ziplining down from hundred-foot-high treetops!
6. Explore Ak’tun Kan, The Cave of The Serpent
Ak’tun Kan is a sprawling cave beneath Flores. Families of all ages can explore its 200-meter upper passage. Then, delve deeper into the lower level, with tunnels partially submerged in a subterranean lake.
7. Dive Into Crater Azul
Crater Azul is a deep well in the river Arroyo El Pucté, a bit southwest of Flores. Its extreme depth means sediment can’t be kicked up from the bottom, leaving the water extraordinarily clear.
It’s a peaceful spot to swim and watch river fish, even without a snorkel, miles away from any human-made place.
8. Walk The 5-Day El Mirador Trail Loop On Mule Or Horseback
El Mirador is one of the most famous “lost” Maya cities in Central America. It’s the home of La Danta, the largest pyramid in the world.
Many travelers take up the challenge of the El Mirador Trail Loop: a five-day trip from Flores to the El Mirador site and back, through the lush tropics.
Taking the tour by mule or horseback makes it easier for families, as members often have varying levels of hiking skill and endurance.
9. Spend A Day In Flores’ Museums, Shops, and Cafes
Flores is so colorful, anywhere you sit makes for a good photo! Take a leisurely day to explore the town’s archeological museums, bakeries, bookshops, and boutiques.
10. Visit The Petencito Zoo and ARCAS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center
The Petencito Zoo and ARCAS are both fun for all ages. Both offer educational and interactive programs about local animals suitable for small kids. Older kids might appreciate unique experiences, like the Sea Turtle Release.
Travelers who plan on a longer stay can even sign up to volunteer for ARCAS for 3 weeks at a time. Connecting with wildlife-saving projects can make a family vacation even more meaningful.
11. Take A Helicopter Ride From Santa Elena
Santa Elena is Flores’ sister city. It’s on a neighboring peninsula, and it’s part of the same municipality.
That peninsula holds the launchpad for a helicopter tour of El Mirador: an extraordinary, bird’s eye view of the Maya Biosphere and ancient pyramids.
12. Go Fishing At La Lancha, Santa Elena
The pier at La Lancha is a great fishing spot. Relax and cast a line while watching a beautiful sunrise. And, if you find the right local chef, you can even get your fresh catch cooked for your dinner.
