About Lake Atitlan Guatemala

Nestled in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre Mountains is Lake Atitlan. Three volcanoes, Sand Pedro volcano, Toliman volcano, and Atitlan volcano surround this 50-square-mile mountain lake.

Lake Atitlan Guatemala is often cited as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Along with its three majestic volcanoes, Atitlan Lake is also surrounded by quaint villages and towns heavily influenced by the Mayan culture.

Lake Atitlan Coffee Tour

Lake Atitlan Guatemala is one of the world’s best coffee-growing regions. The high-altitude mountainous location provides the ideal conditions and climate for growing some of the world’s richest Arabica coffee beans.

Many consider Guatemalan coffee to be the best-tasting coffee bar none. You’ll discover why as you enjoy some Guatemalan coffee samples while on our Guatemala coffee plantation tour.

Panajachel Guatemala - Mayan Village

Located on the shores of Lake Atitlan Guatemala is Panajachel. While in this unique mountain village, be sure to shop at the many artisan markets for handicrafts and textiles.

The name Panajachel is derived from the indigenous Mayan Kaqchikel language. Loosely translated, Panajachel means place of the fruit tree (Matasanos).

The economy of Panajachel now relies mostly on tourism but the villagers still dress in their traditional Mayan attire.

Panajachel’s La Galeria is also worth a visit, as it is one of the oldest galleries in all Central America.

Lake Atitlan Guatemala Boat Tour

Surrounded by imposing jungle escarpments, Atitlan Lake fills an ancient volcanic basin and at its deepest is over 1,120 feet deep.

What makes this lake so unique is that instead of being fed by surrounding rivers, the Lake is actually the source of water for the two local rivers. Also, there are few roads along the shores of Lake Atitlan. Instead, the towns are connected by mountainous roads or can only be visited by boat.

On our Caravan Guatemala tour, you’ll get to enjoy a view of the three surrounding volcanoes from the deck of our fully guided Lake Atitlan boat tour.
