Chichen Itza Tours Included with Mexico Vacations
One of Caravan’s more popular Mexico tours is an all-inclusive, fully escorted ancient civilizations tour where you’ll explore ancient archeological ruins like Teotihuacán or Chichén Itzá and visit ancient cities like Palenque and Uxmal.
Visitng Chichen Itza
A visit to Chichen Itza is a journey into the heart of ancient Maya civilization. Walking among its towering pyramids and intricately carved temples, you can almost hear the echoes of a bygone era. The iconic Kukulkan Pyramid, with its precision-aligned steps, mirrors the cosmos during the equinoxes, creating a magical interplay of light and shadow. Every corner of this historic landmark, from the Temple of the Warriors to the sacred cenote, tells a story of advanced astronomy, deep spirituality, and a community that once thrived in harmony with nature. Visiting Chichen Itza feels like stepping into a living history book, inviting you to marvel at the ingenuity and mystery of the Maya.
El Castillo
The dominant edifice of Chichen Itza, the iconic pyramid, was called El Castillo by the Spanish, who thought it might be a fortress.
In reality, El Castillo is a monumental representation of the Mayan calendar.
There are 18 terraces on each side, the number of months in the Mayan year.
There are four staircases, each with 91 steps, with one final step to the summit temple making 365 steps, one for each day of the year.
But to see the most impressive aspect of the pyramid, you need to join the tens of thousands visiting on the spring and autumn equinoxes.
On these days, the afternoon sun picks out the serpents carved into the staircase, which “moves” by a celestial trick of the light.
It is a magnificent testament to the astronomical and architectural genius of its construction nearly 1,000 years ago. If you can’t make the equinoxes, a sound and light show in the evenings offers an approximation.
