Days 1 & 2: Mexico City & Ruins of Teotihuacán

Caravan’s Ancient Civilizations Tours begin in the capital - Mexico City. Here you’ll experience a unique blend of indigenous and Spanish culture that evolved following the rule of the Spanish monarchy, which lasted 300 years from 1520-1820.

Our escorted tours of Mexico City include visits to the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Tepeyac Hill and gardens plus a brief visit to the National Palace. Within Mexico City the tours include a visit to the ruins of Teotihuacan and the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon. Walk the Avenue of the Dead and visit the world famous National Museum of Anthropology.

Days 3: Mexico City, Puebla & Oaxaca

From Mexico City, tours include a visit to the historical center of the colonial city of Puebla and the romantic heart of Mexico, Oaxaca (both cities are UNESCO World Heritage sites).

Days 4 & 5: Oaxaca, Monte Alban & Veracruz

Here you’ll spend some time in the historic center of Oaxaca plus continue with tours of one of Mexico’s ancient ruin sites in Monte Alban. The ruins of this ancient hilltop Zapotec city include the Main Plaza, Ball Court and North Platform. On day five you’ll drive through the million-acre Tehuacán-Cuicatlán National Biosphere Reserve before moving on to the port city of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico.

Days 6 & 7: Villa Hermosa, Olmec & Palenque

From the photo stop of the 12-foot Olmec heads at Villa Hermosa’s La Venta Park, these Mexico tours continue on to Palenque for a relaxing two-night stay. In Palenque the mysterious Mayan ruins are set against a natural backdrop of jungle foliage.

Days 8 & 9: Uxmal, Merida & Chichén Itzá

Ancient Uxmal dates back to 600 A.D. and includes the Pyramid of the Magicians, the Nunnery Quadrangle, the Governor’s Palace (with its 20,000 intricately carved lace-like stones) and the Turtle House. Then it’s on to the Mexican city of Merida, the Yucatan capital and cultural center. Scenic tours of the Mayan-Toltec ruins of Chichen Itza include Castle Pyramid, the Ballcourt, the Sacred Cenote and the Group of a Thousand Columns.

Days 10: Merida & Cancun

Caravan’s ancient civilizations of Mexico tours end in the world famous city of Cancún on the Yucatán peninsula.
