Day 1: Touch down in the vibrant and bustling city of Mexico City! Take a taxi from the airport to your downtown hotel, where you can check in and prepare for an evening welcome meeting. Meet with fellow travelers and Caravan staff at 8:00 p.m. for an informative orientation about what’s ahead on this amazing 9-day tour of ancient civilizations!
Day 2: Start your 9-day tour of Mexico’s ancient civilizations with a visit to the bustling capital city of Mexico City. You will have many things to do here, witnessing the following:
- Vibrant culture
- World-class art galleries
- Delicious cuisine
Take a guided tour around some of the city’s main attractions, such as Plaza de la Constitución, El Zócalo, and the Palacio Nacional, then spend some time exploring one or two of the city’s many museums, such as the National Museum of Anthropology or the Museo Soumaya.
Day 3: Continue your journey northward to Teotihuacan. This incredible archaeological site is home to some of Mexico’s oldest ruins dating back to the Pre-Columbian era. It is considered one of Central America’s most important ancient cities.
Climb the Pyramid of the Sun for a beautiful view of the surrounding valley, then visit some of Teotihuacan’s other impressive structures, such as the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl. After exploring Teotihuacan, visit Mexico City’s Museum of Anthropology to learn more about this fascinating period in Mexican history.
Day 3: Travel to Puebla, a city known for its colorful architecture and churches. Visit the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, which is incredibly unique due to its baroque-style church–inside it lays:
- Museum containing paintings
- Sculptures
- Manuscripts
- And more.
From Puebla, you’ll go westward along Mexico’s coast to Veracruz. This vibrant port city is known for its lively nightlife and delicious seafood dishes.
Wander through the city’s cobblestone streets and visit its many attractions, such as the Malecon Veracruzano, a seaside promenade lined with shops and restaurants, or take a stroll through Parque Zoológico de Veracruz, an expansive zoo home to hundreds of species of animals.
Day 4: Drive south from Puebla to La Venta, just outside Villahermosa in Tabasco state. This important archaeological site dates back to 1200 BC and is considered one of Mexico’s most historically significant sites. Explore La Venta’s many ruins, including pyramid temples and sculptures depicting ancient gods, before continuing on your journey to Palenque.
Day 5: Spend the day exploring Palenque, one of the most important cities of the Mayan civilization. Located in the heart of the jungle near Chiapas state, this ancient city is surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and lush tropical vegetation. Visit the Temple of Inscriptions, a stepped pyramid dedicated to K’inich Janaab’ Pakal, or tour along Palenque’s Mesoamerican Ball Court for a unique look into this civilization’s historical athletic events.
Day 6: From Campeche, make your way eastward to Mérida, known as “The White City” due to its abundance of colonial-era buildings preserved in pristine condition. Visit the city’s spectacular 16th-century cathedral and its many stunning colonial-era churches before heading to Uxmal, another famous Mayan archaeological site. Wander through Uxmal’s Pyramid of the Magician and its many plazas before returning to Mérida in the late afternoon.
Day 7: From Mérida, continue your journey eastward to Chichén Itzá. This ancient Mayan city is home to some of Mexico’s most impressive ruins, including El Castillo, an imposing stepped pyramid that rises above the grounds of this old site.
Explore Chichén Itzá’s other impressive structures, such as El Caracol, a round observatory tower used by the city’s ancient astronomers, and El Templo de los Guerreros, an impressive temple dedicated to the Mayan god of war, before continuing your journey southward.
Day 8: From Chichén Itzá, drive south along Mexico’s Caribbean coast to Cancún. Enjoy some time soaking up the sun on one of Cancún’s stunning white sand beaches, or take a day trip out to Isla Mujeres for an exciting snorkeling excursion. End your evening with dinner at one of the city’s many excellent restaurants, then enjoy a stroll along Cancún’s lively beachfront boardwalk.
Day 9: On your final day, take a break from sightseeing to relax and enjoy some of Cancún’s finer pleasures. Spend the morning lounging on the beach or pampering yourself at one of the city’s many luxurious spas, then spend the afternoon exploring downtown Cancún for a little shopping and sightseeing. End your trip with dinner at one of Cancún’s excellent seafood restaurants before flying home.

Day 1: Arrive in El Paso, Texas! Fly into El Paso International Airport (ELP) in El Paso, Texas. This vibrant city is the closest American gateway to the Copper Canyon and the starting point of your 8-day tour. Once you’ve arrived, transfer from the airport using your hotel’s courtesy shuttle, or feel free to drive - parking is free.
Check into your room after 3:00 p.m., then enjoy the evening however you’d like - dinner is on your own! At 8:00 p.m., join Caravan for a welcome briefing to get acquainted with the journey ahead and meet other travelers joining the adventure.
Day 2: Venture North to Creel! After an early breakfast, head north towards Creel, located near the entrance of Copper Canyon. Enjoy easy access to Mexico’s most stunning natural beauty as you explore this picturesque mountain village full of artesian crafts, local flavors, and colorful characters. After arriving in Creel, check into your lodge or hotel, have dinner, and get a good night’s sleep before your Copper Canyon Train ride tomorrow.
Day 3: All Aboard! Climb one of Mexico’s most exciting train rides and return for hours of adventure and exploration through the stunning Sierra Tarahumara mountains. Enjoy breathtaking views of canyons, forests, and gorges framed by rugged spires. Take in the enormous depth and immensity of Copper Canyon as you chug along its famous railroads toward El Fuerte.
Day 4: Float Along! After arriving in El Fuerte, get ready to experience one of the most unique ways to explore Copper Canyon -by float trip! Paddle your way down canyon rivers surrounded by fantastic views and incredible natural beauty before returning to Creel for a hearty dinner and a comfortable night’s sleep.
Day 5: Journey Onwards to Barrancas! Return aboard the train again this morning, heading south towards the town of Barrancas. Experience a variety of landscapes and towns as you ride through Copper Canyon, including Urique Canyon — the deepest in North America! Settle into your comfortable accommodations for the night before continuing further tomorrow.
Day 6: Make Your Way to Chihuahua! Enjoy yet another day onboard Mexico’s famous trains as you travel from Barrancas to Chihuahua - passing by breathtaking canyons, forested hillsides, and grandiose mesas. Once you’ve arrived in Chihuahua, explore this vibrant city’s colonial buildings, museums, and delicious food scene before heading back for an evening’s rest.
Day 7: Start your day with a sightseeing drive of Chihuahua, taking in this colorful city’s many sights and sounds. See the Government Palace, its historic center, 18th-century aqueducts, and more. After lunch, cross over the Rio Grande back into the United States before returning to El Paso for dinner on your own.
Day 8: Time to Fly Home! Bid farewell to Mexico’s Copper Canyon this morning as you return to El Paso International Airport (ELP) for your return flight home. Don’t forget to take all those wonderful memories of adventure with you for a lifetime from Mexico’s vibrant tourism. Safe travels!
