Little Bighorn Montana Tour
Visit General Custer’s last stand at Little Bighorn in Montana as part of our Caravan Mt Rushmore Tour.
The Battle of Little Bighorn took place in June of 1876 on what was then the Crow Indian Reservation. Three Indian tribes joined forces, lead by Chief Sitting Bull and Chief Crazy Horse, to overrun and defeat General Custer’s army of more than 700 soldiers.
Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument
The vistas in Big Sky Country Montana stretch from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains and they are sure to amaze you, as will the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
Located near Billings, Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was created in 1876 to preserve the area. It is also meant to commemorate the US soldiers and native Indians who had lost their lives during that historic battle on June 25 and 26, 1876. Historically famous as the site of Custer’s last stand, Little Bighorn Monument is located in the lands of the Crow Nation and also includes the Custer National Cemetery.
Situated just a little northwest of Little Bighorn Battlefield is Billings, Montana, another stop on Caravan’s Mt Rushmore tour.
Named after a former Northern Pacific Railroad president, and founded in 1882, Billings was briefly given the moniker of Magic City because of the rapid growth it experienced not long after its inception. Billings Montana is located between Yellowstone River and the unique Rimrock sandstone formations. Lewis and Clark first opened this area to exploration during their famous expedition from 1804 to 1806.
The Rimrock formations were created from deposits made about 80 million years ago when the Western Interior Seaway — which ran from the Gulf of Mexico up to the Arctic — left behind a deep layer of sand. The resulting compression formed the sandstone rims that we see today.
Not far from Little Bighorn Battlefield and a little to the south is Sheridan, Wyoming. Renowned as the King of Cowboy Towns, Sheridan is located near a strong concentration of American Indian War battle sites. This authentically Western town was once home to the likes of Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley, as well as many performers in Cody’s famous Wild West Show.
Caravan’s Mt Rushmore tour also includes a visit to Sheridan, Wyoming. Nestled in the shadows of the Bighorn Mountains, legendary craftsmen and rough riders share an urban cowboy main street rich with a mix of modern cuisine and remarkable historical saloons.
