A Smithsonian Affiliate Museum

The Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts is a Smithsonian Affiliate museum featuring Rockwell’s original artwork, his library, plus his furnishings and personal items. The beautiful grounds feature 36-acres of vistas, gardens, trees, and sculptures created by Peter Rockwell (Norman Rockwell’s son).

Where Is Norman Rockwell Museum Located?

The Norman Rockwell Museum of Art is located in Stockbridge, Massachusetts at 9 Glendale Road. This 36-acre site overlooks the Housatonic River Valley. In fact, many of Rockwell’s drawings and paintings were drawn and inspired by the local town and its very own residents. Visitors to the Rockwell Museum will not only delight in the art exhibits but also be captivated by today’s locals who are likely the children and great grandchildren of some of Rockwell’s original art inspirations. The Norman Rockwell Museum is open 7 days a week except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Caravan’s guided New England tour follows Route 7 north through the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts to the Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge.

When Did the Norman Rockwell Museum Open?

Norman Rockwell and his wife Molly helped establish the Rockwell Museum in 1969 with a purpose to spread the enjoyment and study of Rockwell’s artwork and its impact on society, popular culture, and social commentary. Prior to its current location, the Rockwell Museum was located at the Old Corner House on Main Street in Strockbridge, MA. In 1993 the museum was moved to the current museum gallery location designed by Internationally renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern.

Norman Rockwell Museum Facts

The Norman Rockwell Museum has many distinctions:

  • It is accredited by the American Association of Museums
  • It is the most popular year-round cultural attraction in the Berkshires
  • The museum is home to 998 original paintings and drawings by Norman Rockwell (the world’s largest collection of his work)
  • The Norman Rockwell Archives, also housed at the museum, contain 100,000+ items including photographs, letters, calendars, fan mail, and business documents

Norman Rockwell Museum Exhibits

Exhibitions at the Norman Rockwell Museum are always being updated. Exhibits to note for 2018 include the Rockwall Roosevelt & The Four Freedoms Enduring Ideals international tour exhibition.

In addition to exhibits there are always interesting programs and events to participate in, including Art Talks, Art Workshops, Family Festival Days, and Gallery Talks. Other interesting things to note about the Norman Rockwell Museum:

  • Free public Wi-Fi.
  • Artists are welcome to bring their graphite pencils and drawing pads (up to 36 x 36) – artists may sit on a stool or bench at least two feet from a work and are invited to use the beautiful grounds for inspiration for sketching and painting.
  • The Museum also has a store for souvenirs and collectables.
  • The Terrace Café is open seasonally, typically from the end of May to late October.
  • Non-flash photography and video with small hand-held cameras is permitted only for private, non-commercial use.

How long will each day be?

A well paced and unhurried itinerary is our goal, after all, you are on vacation! Touring days begin and end at reasonable hours and include frequent stops. While the occasional early morning departure is necessary, we do our best to ensure a leisurely vacation.

How large will my group be?

Group sizes will vary depending on the reserved rooms at the hotels and lodges and the capacity of the ships, trains, and motorcoaches used. Usually, the maximum size will range from 36 to 44 passengers.

Back to Top About Caravan Tours

Caravan’s Proud History

Caravan Tours began selling fully escorted tours in 1952. We have been under the same management and ownership ever since. In 1965, Roger Mudd hosted a two hour CBS TV special on Caravan Tours. This TV production took about one month to make and was so successful it inspired the 1968 romantic comedy movie “If it’s Tuesday this must be Belgium.” In the early 50’s the Mayor of Dublin presented Caravan with the Key to Dublin for bringing the first American tour to the city after WWII. Since then Caravan has been recognized as a pioneer in travel.

Great Value, Book Early

Caravan’s strong buying power gives you great vacations at prices much lower than you can find anywhere. Last year many of our tours sold out quickly. Book early for the date you prefer and the best air fare.

Trade Association Memberships

ASTA, NTA, CLIA, ACTACaravan Tours is a member of ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents), NTA (National Tour Association), CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association), and an allied member of ACTA (Alliance of Canadian Travel Agencies).

How does Caravan Tours sell these tours for such a low cost?

Caravan delivers volume to our suppliers, who in turn reward us with their very best prices, we in turn pass these savings on to you, and you reward us by buying our tours. As volume continues to rise, we then receive even better prices from our suppliers, and we pass even greater savings on to you. This year our tours are better than ever.

How satisfied are Caravan clients?

The short answer is “very.” Our surveys are uniformly very positive. However we continually strive to improve our tours, (they are often updated several times in the course of one year), we study all client surveys and suggestions for improvement very carefully.

Pitch-Free Travel

Caravan includes all activities listed in the tour itinerary page. Caravan does not sell any optional activities which can add hundreds of dollars to your tour price. Your free time is scheduled in great settings where there is no need to buy additional expensive activities.
